Poll: Do you hate clans?

Well, lesse...Clans have their ups, and their downs.

On the good side: Group of people who are serious about the game they play, they are (sometimes) quite good at the game, and when you get in a clan-squad, you know that everyone is (most likely) competent in their job/task.

On the bad side: Clans tend to make up the majority of online FPS communities, and thus if you aren't in one, then you aren't going to survive for long. They also tend to make up the vast majority of the good players, so again, you won't survive for long if you aren't in one. This also means that new and/or casual players will get frustrated with being completely curb-stomped within the first fifteen minutes of gameplay (ala Frontlines: Fuels of War).

So...I s'pose it's good in some ways, bad in a lot of others. If you're in a good, skilled clan? Awesome. If not? ...sucks to be you. Of course...I will not deny the fact that the most thrilling, pulse pounding moments in any FPS will be when you have clan-vs-clan battles. I've never had so much fun, when my clan went up against another clan in a continent-spanning skirmish during my year or two in Planetside. It was...safe to say, the most epic, and possibly one of the most memorable online-gaming moments of my life.

If the clan is full of elitist pricks, trash talking, then yes, i hate them.

If the clan is just a group of friends having fun, im fine with that, just the other night we were commenting how a guy with a riot shield was owning half my team.

PC clans usually keep to themselves and just play other clans, instead of finding random people to "own", then behave like assholes to.

I was gonna say that I think clans are bloody stupid when they take themselves too seriously, and ESPECIALLY when they try to group everyone up to practice and try to compete.

Also there is always one guy who joins and then doesn't feel like coming back.

I'm part of a "Clan", but it's basically a way for me and my IRL friends to unite under a banner and appear unified before the rest of the server (this is TF2, btw). We tried a clan war once and hated it. We just like playing on Pubs, at it's nice to hear "Hey, you TASK guys, you're pretty good!"

I used to be part of a Call of Duty 4 clan, but they were all friends and people I knew. Plus they aren't dicks online. Although I have might quite a few annyoing clans, and I've been invited to a few. Which I have all turned away.

Im in a clan, its 18+ only which helps cut out all the whining and bitching of little shits that think they're 1337. Plus its basically just a small group of mates so we all just piss about no serious 'pros' here thanks.

Clan play on consoles? Really? I can see how that kind of defeats the purpose....There's no real point of having being in a clan unless you plan on having wars, and probably entering tournements...

I was in a call of duty (and a Cod 2) clan back when I was in highschool. We had a lot of fun, though we didn't really bother with 'tags' so much unless we were actually playing competively. They can be good fun, but yeah, on a console it's kinda retarded...I don't see how you can possibly have competetive play when one player is in a lag free environment...

There are many websites that set up clan battles, and Tournaments aswell.

Are there? How do they get around the advantage of a host having a ping advantage? Do they bother? Is it as competetive as PC clan wars? I maintain that I don't see the point, my apparent eletist prick standing and the fact that they exist doesn't seem to alter my opinion. Clans are mostly just wank unless you actually plan on playing against other clans, joining a pub and beating people who've never played together before is hardly an acheivement. I don't really see the appeal when the team your playing can call foul because of latency not being consistant..

I've never really seen much clanplay on console outside of halo (which was mostly just pub wankery with the occasional clan war), on the PC it seems far more widespread. Clans set up their own servers, mods etc etc. Why do you assume I mean to be condescending when I say that the consoles are less susceptable to the 'hardcore leet' gamers, does that really seem like a disadvantage to you?

Clans are ok.As long as their clans intended on fun and not winning.There are clans that are intended on fun.You just don´t notice them.

They are mainly US only ones, the occasional Australian or British one. I was in a clan that did alot of Tournaments, but since they were UK based I never actually go to participate because they would always hold them while I was either at school or sleeping.

Yeah, fair enough. I tend to generalize and assume everyone is Australian. Australian internet really isn't of a high enough standard to make P2P servers 'fair', it's probably not as bad in the US/UK. Having a much larger playerbase can't hurt either...

I like clans that just play together and aren't all serious.
I hate clans that are like "I got clan practice today omg I need to work on my drop-shots and my spray with ACOG sniper rifle. I also don't like the 1337 guys.

I'm sorry what platform do yous play on I never had this problem on the PC which nearly everyone is in a clan and I've actually had the most fun playing CoD2 and CoD4 by being in a clan playing with friends. I have never encoutered people being more elitist in clans than outside of clans as if someone is elitist they're going to be anyway. Although I have done the whole join one team thing but on CoD if you auto assign you usually end up as Spetz or "baddies" basically damn idiots who don't auto.

Also I'd seriously like people to answer what platforms they play on as there seems to be unjustified clan hate as so often whole teams camp, friends join one team and use ts or vent, etc anyway this isn't the exclusive domain of clans.

Most of the messages I get on Xbox Live are from some random 13 year old advertising a clan. I would tell them to piss off if I could.

I've played with some clans. One time I was up against a clan on headquarters on CoD4 who were very good and were mature. They didn't brag and they weren't arrogant. They were good guys. Another time I was in the same team as a clan (I was the only person who wasn't in the clan) and they were shit. At the end of the match the other team were laughing at how shit they were and I joined in. It was pretty funny. I haven't seen any arrogant douche clans yet although I have seen enough arrogant douchebags.

I usually don't join clans. I'm a more of a lone wolf and I'm happy and doing well.
