I LOVE nearly all JRPGS that i have bought over the years...
But there are good and bad games in each genre.
I love JRPGS because they are big, have a good storyline, and there is soo much to do. Besides, the characters are often hilarious!

Okay i've had it with this JRPG hate bullshit.
I bet least than 10 of people here ever played JRPG (at least a decent one)
You're just quoting yahtzee's hate tourds JRPG and i've had it with your lack of brain (to function on it's own)
If you don't like something SHOVE IT and don't speak about it.

I despise them all.

They're way to slow, if i wanna get a good, complex plot with intricate dialogue, deep character and interesting morals i'll read a book.

They're also too spectacular, often to colourful. They lack grit or mood. I know a lot of people will probably disagree with me on this and point out a few examples but their worlds are just to clean and perfect. I can't get immersed or suspend my disbelief.

I loved FFX-2 and I expect to love FFvXIII - different from the terrible-looking FFXIII... but those are the exeptions, not the rule. Also, FFvXIII is violent, which means real fucking stories! There will also be no turn-based-combat.

I don't get the hate for turn-based combat, but then I grew up playing pen and paper RPGs. (That some games are easy enough that you don't have to give any thought to your tactics - the main advantage of turn-based combat - to win is a separate concern.) The only real criticism I have for the genre is the grinding, which has already been mentioned.

They're also too spectacular, often to colourful. They lack grit or mood. I know a lot of people will probably disagree with me on this and point out a few examples but their worlds are just to clean and perfect.
The fact that many JRPGs (I'd cite Final Fantasy VII and VIII as perfect examples) manage to keep the grit and mood while remaining bright and colourful is actually something I like about them. I think the Japanese are good at that in general. I prefer it to the used coffee filter approach to graphic design, and yes I'm fully aware of the irony of quoting Yahtzee in a post in defence of JRPGs.

-Story... I haven't seen many correlations between what makes the story bad, sorry. Can someone explain that argument for me?
the story of ff12 wasn't very good because it had an abrupt and anti-climatic ending and extremely unrelatable characters who are impossible to like on any level. also some extremely obvious twists in the story(you really could see them coming a mile away)

TBH I've never found grind in FFIV have in FFVI.

I also defend my point of LoZ being JRPG-ish in that you did level up in the old one via equipement, increase stats (well health!) and so forth. Not exactly a dialogue ridden beast but still *elements* of RPG-ism.

I understand that they're trying to run an interesting narrative and tell a story, but to me they just come across as boring and pretentious.

I am astonished by all the hate JRPGs get... it's stupid, and I've not heard one single logical critisism against them (if you can then please do, I'd like to hear it) some of the critisisms I've heard are just flat-out wrong

I'm playing through Persona 4 and its actually really fun. Its different than the usual JRPG in that its, well fun. The stories great and suspenseful and the game holds your attention very well.

The basic story is your a transfer student in new school in a small town and bizarre murders start happening and its up to you and your new friends to figure out whats going on andput a stop to it.

I don't dislike a game just because it's a JRPG, but there are certain standard flaws that mar most JRPGs. They're so common that a JRPG that doesn't suffer from those flaws almost feels like a slightly different genre of game.

I like JRPGs mainly because they're the first kind of RPG ever played, and while some of them can be very annoying, a lot of them are willing to go into issues and story elements Western RPGs won't touch with a 20ft pole.

I think the question posed in this thread is similar to ones you see all the time and its really an unfair question. You can't lump an entire genre together and call it "good" or "bad". To be honest, I don't think anyone can even honestly say they "like" or "dislike" an entire genre. Because no matter what genre you're talking about, its bound to have its sparkly gems, and its bound to have its not-so-sparkly pieces of dung.

As far as JRPGs are concerned there are some I REALLY like (FFX), and there are some I completely despise (FFXII).

The same is true for any "grouping" of things. Take music; I mostly listen to country (I know, flame away), but I don't love or even like EVERY song. By the same token I like some songs in almost every other genre too.

The times when someone unequivocally hates everything in one genre are few and far between.

Poor FFXII, so very maligned and I don't understand why...

I'm unsure why people feel it has a crappy story, I just thought there was too little of it and it was weak on the Character Development side of things.

Though I guess I'll concede that the Battle System was only functional and that it didn't really help the game much.

It's not that I hate JRPGs, I hate their niggling little habits. Story-driven games, lame characters, almost no freedom, it's just stupid.

That said, I guess I kinda DO hate them.

Some are okay, Final Fantasy 7 and Elemental Gearbolt (a JRPG railshooter) being my favorite ones out there, but I've played a number of JRPGs growing up that were actually pretty imaginative and entertaining. Now I've played some of the HORRIBLE JRPGs and yes, these games give the genre at large a bad name, but it's like listening to music, some's good, some sucks and some people just don't like an entire genre at large. Does that mean that the genre sucks because some people say so? No just it appeals to a different fanbase.
