first off, used search so if theres a thread like this it didnt come up in the search.

anyway, we hear so much about hacked psp's and how they are killing game sales for the system. well id like to see how many people here at the escapist (as well as other forums i visit) actually have their psp's hacked and if so for what reason (if you chose to say why please be honest).

for me, i bought my psp for the purpose of hacking it. the biggest reason was for the emulators and the ability to transfer my ps1 games so they would be playable while i was at school or where ever. i do put my psp games on the memory stick so i dont have to use the umd drive (loading is actually faster if the game is on the memory stick as opposed to umd, and it also saves battery power), but i own all of the games i do that with, with the exception of japanese games (though i only have one).

I would like to be able to use emulators and homebrew stuff, but I just can't be asked to go through all the work to hack it.

I have the original 1000 series PSP, also know as the Phat model, or "The Best" model.

I hacked it, but after the PSP essentially died, I downgraded back to 1.50, and updated as far as I could with official updates. I plan on selling it after Chains of Olympus 2 comes out, and I beat it.

The original Phat model is the easiest to hack. The latest version of the slim model, the 3000, is impossible to hack. (at present) Sony has really thrown the hacking community a curve ball with this latest model. I suppose practice makes perfect.

At first, I hacked my PSP so that I could fully utilize it's potential. At the time, Sony wasn't allowing users to use the entirety of the screen's resolution for playing videos. They also were being extremely picky about what video codecs it could use. (and the codec they settled on was crap) Hacking my PSP allowed me to use it properly as a video player.

Of course, later Sony added a lot of the functionality I wanted in firmware updates. I no longer needed homebrew programs to watch videos, the base video playback was expanded to satisfy my desires. Now my hacked PSP is mainly used for playing my personal collection of PS1 games. Moving my PS1 games onto my PSP for portable play is pretty kick-ass. I'm going to have to look into buying a larger memory stick.

A friend offered to give my PSP to I guy who could hack it, only problem is I know the guy who would have done it and he thinks its funny to first hack it for you, then fill your memory card up with porn.

I don't have mine hacked and I honestly couldn't care less about it. Emulators are nice but if one were to see my PSP game library, you'd see I don't have much time for emulated games. Being able to dump my PSP games on a memory stick would be nice but but may be remedied with the plan Sony has for the PSPgo to compensate UMD owners. Probably the only real reason I'd hack my PSP is to download japanese games that have not yet been localized or on the rarest of occations; to "demo" games I am interested in buying.

I hack my friends PSPs because they ask me too, but as for my own its still the lowest version. Waiting for Dissidia to come out before doing anything else.

Well, I have the 3000, so no. I have no real intentions to do so, though I might if my PS2 stops working (what with the 100% backwards compatibility between the PS1 and PS2). I have plenty of games and will probably sell some shortly to buy Dissidia and 358/2 Days.

I have an "unupdated" psp too! I can run many emulators and roms which I have "legitimate physical copies" of.

sorry to get off-topic, but you're all admitting to a crime, arn't you?
depends on where you live but im assuming your speaking of te us and europe. yes and no, its only a crime if you distribute or sell hacked consoles, but if you hack it for personal use no, though sony does have civil recourse though thewont just take an individual to court over it due to the fact that any possible monatary compensation would be less than the court costs and the bad pr, not to mention it would do nothing to discorage the hacking of psp's.

It's not a crime if you rip your own games and don't sell or give them out. I can prove I own my psp games, plus other copies I made myself.
