I'm wondering how many of you escapists like classical music.

Myself? I like a lot of modern music, but in my eyes classical music is just so much more sophisticated. You can convey so many emotions through the music that are not even remotely present in rhianna hit #153.
I guess I'm a bit biased though as I grew up playing the violin from I was 4, and singing in a known boys choir for some years as well.

Yes, a lot of it can be wonderful. Because there was a lot of classical music added in with the NGE soundtracks I'd found a while ago, I would listen to a combination of the two just about every day; I say it's a nice mix.

I do like classical but have never really goten that into it. Most classical music is brilliant and a welcome change from what I listen to.

It depends. After a especially bad day, a little classical cheers me right up. Usually though, I'm very calm and easy-going, so I don't really need any extra assistance.

I love classical music, but unfortunately I don't really have the means to acquire much of it. I love Opera and symphonies and the like, and I enjoy it when piano or harp players do their thing in the mall.

Yes, I really enjoy listening to classical music every now and then. Maybe because my dad is a real opera-buff and puts on a classical CD whenever he gets the chance (you should see his opera-DVD collection). I also like to think that that's where I got my love for orchestral soundtracks.

Not particularly, I find Baroque and especially Romanticism and beyond works much more enjoyable.

Every once in awhile, I like classical music. However, most of the time I prefer classical-styled remixes of video game music.

EDIT: Post #777. Lucky me.

Where's the option for "HELLZ YEAH!"?

I just love Frederic Francôis Chopìn's work. ( I think I miss spelled it though. Forgive my blasphemy)
I believe you might have heard of Nocturne. His work.

I grew up with classical music as well, having learnt it from an equally young age, and studied it up to postgraduate level. That's probably why I hate it now. Once you understand how it works, you start to realise that it's certainly not inherently superior to pop music, or any music. It has its forms, rules and procedures, just like Rhianna does. Each to their own though - I can see why other people like it, but I'd rather be listening to something I can relate to, that's less divorced from the cultural context of my life, like, um... Brokencyde...

As long as the classical music doesn't come with that side-rder of elitism.

I used to play A LOT of classical music, and the attitude of some of those musicians was so far up their arses it just wasn't funny. The music in itself was glorious; the attitude was one of: "we are the only people who truly know about and appreciate music. And you who come to see us perform are uneducated swine."

As to personal preferences, well, I enjoy chamber music, anything that is light and playful really. A lot of baroque stuff is just too heavy for me, as is Beethoven's big symphonies.

I think so. I do believe he wrote a lot of nice music for piano.

I dont listen to classical music on a regular basis really, but when I do I enjoy it immensely.
It does a rules etc, but what really makes it special is how much emotion the artist can put into it. You see that in some modern music as well, but the mainstream pop generally doesn't have it.

The really good pop practitioners are able to do that. Most are not. It's the same for classical. It's just that the poor composers have been forgotten. For every Mozart and Beethoven that was a genius there were thousands who were not and made cookie-cutter garbage which has since been consigned to the dustbin of history.

1st person: sigh, if you know the difference, then you know what was meant by 'classical' as far as the poll question went, don't be difficult, especially as you've made sure you've neatly encompassed almost everything which isn't proper classical in what you said.

2nd person: well actually no it's not, but again for the purposes of this thread 'classical is fine as a catch all term for non-'popular' music.

I used to play the clarinet a lot but now i sing in a choir much more. so I love lots of music from early up to when composers thought tunes were beneath them and started writing things to make them sound as horrible as possible. Pet hate's probably piano concertos... sure they sound nice but all but a few are so boring for the orchestra it's just not funny...

Classical music is my first and greatest love in the realm of musical expression, particularly the work of composers from the Romantic period. I'm also a classically trained pianist.

I've always been on the border in my interpretation of your posts in music threads. On the one hand, you're a self-professed "industry insider", and you do make some good points on the business aspects of things from time to time.

On the other and far more important hand, you're generally popping in to act as a "pop apologist", and that puts us at odds ideologically, as I find the vast bulk of popular music to be inherently worthless crap.

But with this post, you just told me you hate classical, compared the work of musical geniuses to purveyor of banality Rihanna (why?!!) and suggested you would actually voluntarily listen to Brokencyde. That pretty much shatters any chance there might have been of me taking any position you espouse on music seriously. Good to know!

Well, For the purpose of the thread I'm using wikipedias definition of classical music:

Also did you mean something like this?
