I'm a major RPG nerd. But the only ones I can think of atm are Golden Sun and the Tales of series. I think I tend to prefer jRPGs over wRPG's honestly. Honestly, I don't care much for gameplay, or how things work, what I play them for is their story. Whether they'er turn based or real time, it's all awesome to me if the story is awesome.

The only wRPGs I've ever liked are Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. Bethesda games are among the worst I've ever witnessed, as well as Dragon Age.
What's wrong with Bethesda games? And Dragon Age?
Bethesda games have the worst, most boring gameplay I've ever seen in a game with their budget. Dragon Age's is a little better, but all three also have dull, completely uninteresting and unmotivating stories. They aren't even decent sandbox games, if I wanted to screw around and get nothing done in a singleplayer game I'd play GTA. If I wanted to do endless sidequests for characters I don't give a damn about I'd play WoW and at least have raiding to look forward to and real people to chat with.

Their gameplay is practically non-existant, their stories are depressingly stale, I just don't understand what anybody sees in them. It's even more confusing that a company that can make an excellent game like Mass Effect that at least manages to copy enough of the basics of a working, albeit overplayed, genre and wrap it around truly interesting characters and events can turn around and try to sell Dragon Age as an A-list game.

RPG's are, together with FPS, my favourite genre and I enjoy games from pretty much every RPG sub-genre, though JRPG the least.

Especially more traditional WRPG's like Arcanum, Planescape: Torment, KotOR and even Dragon Age: Origins, but also action RPG's like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 and even the odd JRPG (especially on handhelds) like Golden Sun and Lunar: Silver Star Harmony (beautiful game that is, wished I could play it more).

It's a simple question really, do you like to play role playing games -RPG's-?
If so which do you like to play, and which do you not like to play?
I have lately been playing alot of RPG's and have been wondering if other people like them as well, because I've heard much controversy as to wether RPG's are good or bad, so what's your opinion?

Also which type of RPG do you like? -WRPG, JRPG...-
Yea I use them all the time in MW2.

Jk. Of course, everyone likes a good role playing game

I tend to love a good RPG, but GOOD RPGs are far and too few in between.

For the past few years now I feel that Westerm RPG makers are outdoing their Japanese counterparts with releases like Morrowind, Dragon Age, KotOR, Mass Effect, ME2, Fallout 3, etc...

What makes a good RPG is also kind of hard to put a finger on really.

I think about Morrowind and Oblivon: Oblivion looks better and has some better gameplay (Radiant AI, improved combat, the "carry" feature), but it feels so lacking and empty. The Imperial City felt like a pretty small town to say Vivec. And yes I know Vivec is bigger technically, but shouldn't the heart of the Empire feel more ALIVE?

Oblivion had it's fair share of caves, small settlements, cities, treasures, ruins, and miscellaneous locale, but Morrowind seemed much more expansive and large because you essentially HAD to walk to nearly all the various locations of note. Fallout 3 was a great improvement upon Oblivion's ideas and new systems because of this. It forced you to take in your surroundings as you make your way to your next destination which should be an enjoyable part of an RPG in my opinion.

And as for Mass Effect/2 and KotOR/2 they introduce a core element of an RPG: UNIQUE and INTERESTING characters! Oblivon had 2 stand out characters, Fallout had many more, while Mass Effect/2 and KotOR/2 had so many fascinating characters and multi-branching scenarios in which you interact with them that you WANT to replay and see what other outcomes can be.

Anyway I guess that's enough ranting for now.
:p

One more thing: Final Fantasy games have generally been good up until about 12. When you take away the open world to explore, you really depreciate what an RPG could've been.

I like some of W and J RPGs, recently I have found that JRPGs are garbage though, most are just about forgettable characters or even worse FFXIII.

Recently I've played Breath of Fire III, Final Fantasy VI, Legend of Dragoon, Phantasy Star IV and Breath of Fire IV. They've been far better than any of the newer JRPGs, the only gems I've found would be Persona 3 and Crimson Gem Saga.

WRPGs I'm more or less new to, enjoying Oblivion, had my fun with Fallout 3, touched a bit of Dragon Age Origins and the genre has been great.
Btw, do you know that Crimson Gem Saga is coming on iPhone within couple of weeks? Join its Official Fan Page - http://www.facebook.com/pages/CrimsonGemSaga/130049243704925
Did I just get quoted by an adbot named after a good RPG series? No I think the PSP version is good enough without shitty touch screen controls.

I love RPG's because of the sense of progress you get; you overcome certain challenges, and the numbers get bigger, or you get more skills or whatever. So if an action game has some light RPG elements, I'm more likely to give it a try.

They're in general also heavier on the story aspect than most other genres (apart from adventure games, and some other notable exceptions), and I play games mainly the same way I read a book or watch a film, to see what happens next, and to know how it all ends.

I prefer WRPG's, because the grind is often less boring, but I've played some damn good JRPG's too.

My favourites are the old top down Infinity Engine games: The Baldur's Gate series, The Icewind Dale series, and Planescape: Torment. No other games come even close.
