Funny, I was just looking at this:

Play more UT2K4
Yeah, I would do that....

Except I'm still playing UT99. :p I feel the original is much faster, and much more...visceral than UT2K4. I mean...The weapons in 2K4 feel SO much weaker than the ones in 99...

Then again, I haven't gotten around to the huge combat maps in 2K4 with vehicles yet (Which I've been assured make the game WAY better than 99). Been too busy lately.

Yes and no. My favourite kind of shooters are the ones that don't take themselves too seriously. Halo multiplayer (especially Grifball), Borderlands, CoD zombies, Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D, etc. But I don't miss the secret hunting or the keycard hunting. God, I hated that so much.

Besides, between Resistance, Halo, Bulletstorm, Serious Sam 3, Bioshock, Deus Ex: HR, Crysis, Dishonored (I'm counting it), Borderlands, RAGE, F.E.A.R., Metro 2033, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Shattered Horizon, Section 8, The Chronicles of Riddick, Zeno Clash, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Mirror's Edge, Condemned, The Darkness, Portal, Half-Life 2, and Prey, there's plenty out there that isn't a "military shooter" like everyone loves bemoaning as the only thing being released these days.
Thank you.

Seriously, people complain about there being nothing but military shooters these days when there are really only three: Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor, and I'd hesitate to group CoD with those other games these days since it's so out there an over the top so really just two.

God no. People say "Oh weren't old school shooters reat. They took skill, they were hard, you had to think!" That's really not the case. Old school shooters were horrid for their bullet sponge enemies, weak as shit guns (loud =/= strong), their over reliance on over the top weaponry, and god awful level design.

I mean come on, most old school shooters were exactly the same, moreso than shooters of today. Play Quake, Unreal Tounrament, or Serious Sam side by side, they're all the same game with a slightly different coat of brown. The only difference between old school games and new games is how the bullshit is presented. Once it was fast, imprecise, obsessed with rocket jumps, now it's slower, accurate, and ossesed with pseudo-military shit.

Either way shooters have always been the same as everything else released, brown, and WAY too simplistic. Anyone who claims otherwise is deluding themselsves.

I mean I'm not saying modern shooters are better. People also over state the number of 'modern' shooters there are. I mean what is there really? CoD and Battlefield with the occasional failure like Medal of Honour. The old school shooter people are pinning for are still around, and highly successful;. Serious Sam 3, Tribes: Ascend, Quake Arena all have active player bases.

You know what I'd prefer, rather than trying to force the industry backwards in a vain effort to relive it's hayday? I'd prefer something new. Remember that? New, the thing we used to want games to be? Anybody? No, only me? Okay then.

Nah. I think a lot of old school shooters were just as flawed as today's. A lot of them were just "run and gun" "shoot everything that moves" style games. They gave you a lot of cool weapons to just shoot the same aliens over and over and over, lacking any strategy or depth. Think Duke Nukem, Doom, or Wolfenstein. As little as modern military shooters have to offer, we do have a lot of great shooters from this era.

I don't miss them. Why? Because they haven't left!
Sure, they aren't in the majority like they were in their heyday thanks to the insane popularity of games like Call of Duty and Battlefield which unfortunately shifted shooter trends into the boring territory of quote-unquote "realism". But if you go to a games retailer it's still easy to find a game released fairly recently which keeps to the unrealistic fun that still thrives from the shooters of old.

I like modern shooters. I bought every CoD game after Modern Warfare, and with the exception of World at War, I loved all of them. Any argument that can be pointed at CoD, there is (what I believe to be) a valid counter-argument. Games like CoJ: The Cartel do need to bugger off, but that's not because they're gritty shooters, it's because of all the reasons Extra Credits brought up.
Old-shool shooters bore me. I like my chest-high walls and my gruff military types. By all means, have your demons and ludicrous guns, but leave me my 5.56mm and cover fetish.

Yes, because they're all totally the same game with a different coat of brown[/sarcasm]. Thanks for demonstrating your lack of knowledge on the subject matter.

I don't particularly care for most shooters, so no I don't miss the old shooters, or the new shooters. I only care about a handful of outliers that I like.

No.

I don't particularly miss the days when we thought that having a machine 1000 times less powerful than our cell phones was awesome. I hate how older gamers think that less choice meant better experiences. When we were 14 years old, we had no choice in the kinds of games we played. Our parents bought us 1, maybe 2 games a year and you either played it or went without playing. You got good at those older games because you did not have any choice.

I do miss old-school shooters. I remember playing some of the greats like Dark Froces, Pain Killer, Doom II, Hexen, etc. I would be especially happy if Tribes 2 were some somehow come back. Ascend is alright, but Tribes 2 was AMAZING! I lost SO many hours in that game!

The first 2 videos you posted were of exactly what I was talking about and I thought it was clear that I was exaggerating. Of course they're not literally the same, but neither are modern shooters. No need to get so aggitated.
