I just wanted to poll people if they mod any of their own games, whether it be a mod they created or someone else's mod.

I mod. Heck, when you get UT2004 ECE, which comes with several demo versions of popular mods such as Jailbreak, ChaosUT2 and UnWheel, you can't help it.

Depends on the game. Most I play without mods, but WoW and Oblivion for example, I found thoroughly more enjoyable after I'd installed a bunch of mods (painstakingly, I might add). In general, no however.

So many Source mods I've tried, as well as Red Orchestra and Blitzkrieg mods so I definitely play other's mods. I don't mod myself but I like to try my hand at map making now and again.

If I see a mod that looks good for a game I have, I'll download it and give it a go. I never play vanilla Morrowind or Oblivion anymore either, always got a couple of UI mods installed at the very least. I've made my own basic mods for the likes of the earlier command and conquers using the INI files, but that's about the extent of my modding knowledge so far, though I am interested in bettering my modding skills.

I enjoy the more professionally made mods for online games, such as SourceForts for Half Life 2: Deathmatch.

However I have found little interesting single player mods for any game, mainly because I can't be bothered to download and install them a lot of the time. I get especially annoyed when my friend tells me to get Oblivion and install some mod which apparently makes the game worth playing, since my views on the Elder Scrolls series are remarkably similar to the comments Yahtzee made on his review of Oblivion and because I feel that any game which needs modding to be good is pointless. At least Unreal Tournament and Half Life are great games on their own.

Mods in themselves are only useful to those who already have a game anyway, and it makes it hard for me to shake the feeling that these people could have put their time and effort to making a full version of a game for everyone to play. There's also the fact that the only good mods I've seen are ones for game which are already awesome, so having mods for bad or mediocre games is pointless.

Away from my ramblings and more to the point of the thread though, I rarely use mods for games, which makes my choice in the poll very difficult since there is no "Sometimes" option.

HOW is it pointless? You take a fun game and make really even more damn fun to play. If you had a sandwich and could make it taste alot better by adding some mayonnaise then why wouldn't you?
What he's saying is games that require mods to be fun, or even to be playable, are pointless. If a game's not good on it's own merits then it's just not worth buying simply to mod it, I think that's the gist of what he wanted to say.

I'd like to point out the major word in that sentence was "NEED". One of my other friends has tried to get me to play a bad game, but says I have to mod it to make it worth playing. A game shouldn't NEED to be modded to make it fun, but it is a nice feature to have along side a good game.

EDIT: LordCraigus got there before me. :p

I only mod Morrowind on TES Construction set. I used to spend bloody hours making whole new towns and stuff and then making quests that didn't work.

I don't usually mod. The only game I modded was GTA:SA. On the other hand, I'm working on a mod, so yes and no.

But that begs the question: "Why couldn't the team who made the mod have made their own game?"

Which is my problem with mods. The lazy or rushed developers miss things out which mods fix, but mods themselves are lazy. Unless it's just a new map for an online game (Which there are a lot of very well made maps for Team Fortress 2 currently) a mod developer should do more than fix a bad game.

modding as in mod it myself? dunt have the skills for that, but if it means downloading mods then yes lots of them, especially in oblivion, which is just not worth the effort without the awesome community developed mods...
