Last weekend, I officially took my first step to being an old man...I tried golf :)

And I absolutely loved it.

I'm twenty six years old and have always wanted to try golf (I suppose you'd call it a "bucket list" item of mine). Last weekend, I went to the driving range, which was a blast. I then played a nine-hole round which was...frustratingly fun (I shot a 72 if you were wondering with a "double bogey" being my best shot). My friends description of "You'll learn new swear words on the golf course" was spot-on but the good kind.

I intend to go to the driving range a few times over the summer and attempt that course at least one more time before the forces of snow force me to bow out of the game.

So I'm curious: Anyone here ever play golf and if so, do you play regularly? Did you enjoy it? Do you have any recommendations for a complete newb? What was your best score?

Nothing wrong with golf, and I wouldn't say it's solely for old men :p

I got given my uncle's old clubs as he is a similar size to me, I've done a bit of driving, been to the putting green and been practicing chipping and stuff too but never actually played a proper round yet, so you're ahead of me there :)

From what I have experienced I can agree with you, it is very frustrating, but also satisfying :D

Fine game even in my limited experience (a couple rounds at a neighboring country club)

I used to play 2x a week (6 am tee times, ugh) while in high school, but I didn't really like it.
I don't mind playing 9 holes, but 18 just takes too long to be fun anymore.

I have nothing against the game except the time it takes.

My dad's obsessed with golf and always tries to get me to play. I've been lucky in that I've gotten my playing down to roughly once every five years. I'm decent enough to get a par every couple holes, but I have no interest in getting better at walking around for five hours hitting a little ball

I've golfed on and off since I was 12.

And since I'm working at a golf course this summer, I get to go on the range whenever I want and if there are openings, I get free golf. Unfortunately, going after work is very tiring, so I don't often take advantage of this opportunity. Will be going a couple of times next week, though, as I need to start.

Ask your friends/family. I was incredibly surprised to find out how many people have played the sport. My step-brother is someone I never expected to be a golfer but he not only golfs, but had multiple sets of clubs! I've been borrowing his clubs and will hopefully get my own set once I determine that I'm not just in the honeymoon period with this sport.

Yeah, I have golfed since I was a kid. Not regularly, mind you, so I'm not any good at it. I have long breaks, and then I golf in spurts. It's nice to do with friends. Alone, it kind of sucks.

I only did a bit of golf practice during gym class. Yeah we had golf in gym class, we were awesome like that.

I'd like to do it every now and then though. It's pretty relaxing. Except putting. Fuck putting.

It's more of a rich people sport than an old people sport.

But, regardless of that, I don't mind golf, but playing by yourself isn't much fun. Has to be with friends IMO.

I don't play golf, but I do enjoy going to the driving range with my driver. Something oddly nice about getting that good long range shot.

I've been to the driving range several times but have never actually played on a real course. I was at the LPGA all weekend just a little while back as well. My interest is slowly growing and I have considered taking lessons.

It's not necessarily a rich person sport.
Sure if you want to get into one of those super high class, $30k/year membership ones, yeah you need to be pretty damn rich.

But for public courses, you can usually find a place to play a round for 25-50$.

I've been playing since I was around 11 and I love it. I mostly just play for fun with family or friends, but I will play in a tournament every once in a while.

Where's the: "I've played it before, and it wasn't bad" option?
I don't know if it worked but I edited in "Yes and it was alright" as an option just for you! :)

This is also very true. It can be expensive to start up (for example, I just bought a new golf bag for $25 and a "golf uniform (polo shirt, khaki shorts, & hat)" for $55. I also got a set of tees ($4 for 200) and a box of golf balls ($20). If you have no one who can get you clubs, I'm finding $100 for a decent set at used sports places.

So from what I've found, a start-up with NO help from anyone is about $200. Bucket of balls at the range was $7 and a 9-hole round at the public course was $17.

Yes, but I'm terrible at the game; I can drive the ball a decent distance, but with absolutely no accuracy or consistency. I'm also terrible at putting, if I get the ball on the green in one swing, it will take me another five to sink it.

I enjoyed playing, but I can't see myself playing the sport often enough to become any good at it (it's too expensive).
