Poll: Do you prefer voice dubs or captions?

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was on television today and it was the dubbed version. I just couldn't swallow an American voice and off sync words. I would have enjoyed it much more if they had just captioned the movie instead of dubbing it.

So, When watching a foreign movie, assuming you are not fluent in it's language, do you prefer voice dubbing or captions?

I have slight hearing damage as it is and I'm used to reading quickly. So, captions.

Captions, and if they're not available I'd rather use body language to figure out what the hell is going on than to endure a dub.

You can figure out a lot when you can't understand the words. Just watch Kill Bill 2 without subs some time, and you'll notice that you still understand everything that's said by Pai Mei, even if you didn't get a word.

since in my experience the dub sounds like ass (either due to voice actors or poorly translated script or some other reason),i prefer sub.dub has its uses though

I've yet to find an anime or movie that has better dubbing then the original language. I might not understand the words themselves, but hearing the feeling behind their language and reading the words my mind puts it together and its always better then listening to the dubbing.

generally dub, concentrate when I read and miss whats happening on-screen, same goes for games, I just focus on reading instead of the action

It usually depends on the dub quality, I can go either way.

Depends a dubbed show (as in anime) but a Captioned movie (as in crouching tiger hidden dragon)

Being an anime freak, I'll take looking at subtitles over dubbing every time. Half the time the American voices never match the character or scenarios well. The one exception to this is Ryuk from Deathnote. I like hearing his voice in English because its a lot easier to pick up on his sarcasm in English, and I <3 sarcasm.

Not sure, I don't like reading subtitles, because it distracts from the film. But as you said OP, Voiceovers can be out of sync, which is also very distracting. I might go with the secret 3rd option, learning the language the film was made in before watching it. Takes a lot of time, but worth it in the end

I prefer dubs when the dubs are really well done. Black Lagoon is one of those rare animes would should be seen in English, I felt. If you can't get a good dub, which is the case for most media coming in to the US, then I like it with subtitles.

It depends. If it's a live action movie, like Pan's Labyrinth, dubs would throw me off and take me out of the experience. In anime, if the voice-acting/translation isn't totally horrific, then I'd go with dubs.

But, all-in-all, a cheeseburger is always the best value.

i go with dubs but if the chosen voices are bad than either original language of the movie (if english), subtitles take away attention from the screenplay in my opinion

Dubs are great for the most part, there are the occasional one which is dire (learnt how bad the one piece one was recently ) I get a little tired when the same voice actors get reused tho.
