very few people will consider NOT having a tattoo a deal-breaker, but plenty of people will.
To be blunt, I wouldn't want to enter a relationship with someone idiotic enough to condemn another who is tattooed. I've never met anyone in the real world who has said they would go that far though. Some say they don't like tattoos but never would it get in their way of a relationship - apart from something extreme like racist slogans on a face which is totally understandable.

My first girlfriend was like that haha. In fact, I got my tattoo the week after she dumped me (for unrelated but perfectly justified reasons, I assure you) as a petty "fuck you" to her. I still like it, though.

Personally, I think tattoos on women look totally rad.

I certainly wouldn't say that people who would call ink a deal-breaker are in the majority, but they are out there, and you're probably right. That kind of attitude would likely be indicative of much deeper personal prejudices :X

EDIT: I thought about it some more, and I remember how I felt when I got it. It was very liberating. It was the first time in my adult life I was able to make a decision without really having to consider someone else, because I dated her from High School to a couple years after. I was always respectful and devoted, so when she said she didn't want me to get a tattoo I listened and thought nothing of it, but then when she left (She ended a five-year relationship via a World of Warcraft chat window, shit you not), I was truly on my own for the first time ever, so I went and got a tattoo, and beyond being a good artistic decision, it was an AMAZING experience and it finally made me realize that as an adult, if you want to do something, usually the only thing really holding you back is YOU. It was always something "I wanted to do" until it was something I fucking DID.

I guess what started as petty became a real life-affirming experience.

So no, not only do I not regret my first tattoo, I just got out of another relationship so hell, maybe I'll go get another one this week.

Never. It was a special time I wanted to remember, I think that's most important.
Also the design is timeless, the meaning remains.

I still feel energized when I look at it :)

My first tattoo is a heartagram rosary around my ankle and on my foot, which I got done in July, which I don't regret one bit. My second tattoo was two pokeballs on my hip bones, which I do not regret and doubt I ever will. xD I always have that fear of regretting tattoos when I go to get them, but then I look at them when they're done and I know that if I was willing to go through that kind of pain in order to get them, then there's no way I'd regret that decision. ^^

Wish I could get a tat, but I freak out whenever a needle makes it way towards my precious flesh.
It doesn't even look like a needle, it looks more like a big pen. ...however it feels more like a thousand mosquitoes with tiny chainsaws are going to town on your flesh.
Mine felt more like a moderate sunburn being rubbed with fine sandpaper.

Actually that was the analogy the tattoo artist that gave me my tattoo used. He said it feels like mosquitoes with chainsaws. And yeah, that's seems about right. Well something with a tiny chainsaw anyway.

That's actually the reason why I'm holding off on getting one.

I see people that I know left and right who are getting tattoos that mean nothing, and don't even look good. A girl I know has gotten two dinosaur tattoos that legitimately look like they are washable tattoos.

Money is a factor, and I have never been through anything memorable enough that warrants it getting permanently etched on my skin.

That said, I was found some inspiration in a Leonardo Da Vinci quote.

"As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well spent brings happy death"

I have no artistic worth whatsoever, but one day I'm thinking about getting that tattoo'd on my skin. It may seem dumb to some, but when I read that it really related to my life and got me thinking about how fucking stupid it is to be hindered by social awkwardness, and how I let life pretty much pass me by because I didn't think I was worth it. Been a much better person sice I read that.

I'd prefer a design. Was thinking about getting something from good old Leo's sketchbook.

Don't have any to regret yet, but i'm considering getting Machinae Supremacy's band logo at some point in the future. not quite sure where i want it though, so i want to put a bit more thought into it.

i'm also thinking of getting the skull rune of Khorne but as above i'm not sure where exactly i'd want it.

I only have one so far, but many more to come, hopefully soon depending on how my wallet is feeling. Its a large Est. 1991 across my lower stomach. Now most will say its a silly tattoo but I like it. Now I don't regret getting it at all but I wouldn't have minded getting something else instead of it and getting my current one at a later date. This opinion is not to be confused with regretting getting this tattoo. I plan to begin working on my sleeve next.

Would you mind showing us a few pics? Your tattoos sound cool.
All the pictures I have of myself I seem to be wearing long sleeve shirts; I'll see what I can do in the future....

I don't regret any of my tattoos. Though i do have the southern cross on my ankle and it's become the racist bogan brand and i don't want to be assosiated with those types. So i'm going to expand it into stars a rainbow with a unicorn.

Not even a bit, it's not the best tattoo ever and I always forget it's there (Even though it's only at the top of my arm). But it still holds meaning for me nearly 6 years later and remind me of some fun times.
Desperately want more and have loads of ideas but I can't justify the money at the moment.

My first tattoo was a tiny black star on my hand, I don't regret it at all. Some people still don't know it's there as they don't really look at my hands.

Yes, but only because of the placement. I meant for it to be on the side of my arm instead of the front, and didn't notice it until too late.

But hey, that was 3 years ago. I've been rolling ever since.

I'm among the "don't have one" crowd.

I'm pretty torn about my personal judgement on the matter. On the one hand, it's something I would have chosen, and there's a chance it might bring back fond memories surrounding the reason I chose it. On the other hand, I'm a seventeen year old. That part of me is saying "screw sentimentality", stating there's a much greater probability of regretting it sometime in the future, and is pretty much calling the first part of me an idiot right now. And I agree with me. If I want sentimental or otherwise endearing artwork, I can always hang it up on my bedroom wall and look at it. If I change my mind, I can always take it down with no price or consequences. Or I could slap the image on a T-shirt if I ever feel compelled to walk around flaunting it.

I don't think I'll ever be getting a tattoo.

I'd say it's very dangerous to approach tattoos as anything less than permanent, as will many artists themselves.

I don't regret my first tattoo, although I now have incorporated it into a sleeve on my leg (why aren't they called leggings? :D ). For anyone thinking of one I'd say pick an artist wisely, be prepared to travel and approach tattoos with a money-no-object mindset (within reason, £2,000 an hour might be unreasonable but £80 is not) - oh, and bigger tend to be better due to the ability to insert more detail.
Couldn't agree more with all of this. If you don't find a good artist, you will regret your tattoo in the future more likely than not. Even if you think your idea is so simple no one could possibly screw it up, pay the extra money, travel a little farther, whatever you need to do. Go in with the assumption that this is going to be there forever because the last thing you want is to have to pay to have it removed, or be left with something you hate. It's worth it to get it right the first time. So do your research, find out who other people went to and what they were like, and look at their work with a very critical eye.

And one final thing is to be patient. Don't decide you want a tattoo and rush to get the first thing that pops into your mind. I have two tattoos and I mulled over the designs and their position on my body for months despite them being quite simple tattoos. If you spend the time patiently thinking over every detail you'll not only be more likely to love the final result, you'll also be more likely to abandon the ideas you aren't crazy about and stick with the ones you are. If you still love a tattoo idea after thinking over every detail 6 months down the road then it's probably a keeper.

I've only got two tattoos myself. The Kingdom Come Superman "S" on my upper back, and another symbol on my right calf (http://www.symbolset.org/hands-of-god-symbol-2.html). I spent months contemplating both of them before I ever let a needle touch my skin and I don't regret them at all. I'd like to get some more tattoos, but haven't settled on any designs in the last 4-5 years since I got my second. I've had ideas here and there but nothing that held up in my mind over time.

As far as I know, my sister doesn't regret her first tattoo either which is cool. She got a frog tattooed on her left hip which I actually drew and designed for her, so it's cool that she still loves it. Even cooler that she came to me about the idea before she ever went to a tattoo artist.

No! Got tattooed

God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,"

I am going away for 6 months and this is the lesson I hope to never forget so...

NO!
