Ok I have noticed alot of people stick to using the main character on games that allow you the freedom of character and party selection. I have noticed this most with Star Ocean and Tales of games. I personally get rid of them if I don't like them (Edge, SO:TLH) but I tend to favor mage or Archer types.

Yeah, I do. I like to think of my main character as the leader. The leader should be at the forefront of the battles, no? Or at least participating in them, if they're more magically inclined.

One exception was Final Fantasy XII. I had a Balthier/Basch/Ashe team. Really, really didn't like Vaan.

Well it all matters tactically for me. Often times the leader has some useful power or is quite strong.

Other times they are quite fail and I replace them a la pokemon series (Sorry starters, but better pokemon exist).
My Charizard single handedly beat the Water Elite Four lady.

Ya.

With FIRE BLAST.

Actual answer is usually, but if I have better people and it gives me the choice...

I'm actually drawing a blank on games where you oust the proper main character from the action when he's the main character. You sort of can't have a story without the guy (or girl).

A number of RPGs give you the option to substitute in 'minor' character in place of your 'main' character. The 'main' character is still part of the group, he just won't take part in the battles.

Balthier as ranged damage (switching to melee when I felt like it), Basch as 'tank' and Ashe as caster, primarily. Though by the time I got through most of the game, they had proficiency in every single ability and it was only the Espers, equipment and gambits that differentiated them. I could have swapped their sets around at any point and it would have made no difference really.

I usually stick with the main character for a few of reasons:

They're usually pretty damn good at whatever it is they do. See: Ike from Fire Emblem (or as I call him, Warrior Jesus).
I've gotten used to their playstyle and/or characterization (Lloyd Irving from Tales of Symphonia and Kalas from Baten Kaitos).
Or because it just feels appropriate somehow (like hell am I giving up using Laharl, even if he didn't kick ass).

Really, it does seem in a lot of cases that my using the main character is a given. The real question varies game-by-game, which of the others do I use most often? Ultimately, I try to use everyone.

Both Tales of and Star Ocean games allow this, Tales of games go one furthur and allow you to change the world/town avatar to one of the other members and it is required to do so at some points.

Ah, memories of having Zelos Wilder as my avatar...charming the pants off of every female NPC in the game. Or at least, charming items and money off of them.

See: Ike from Fire Emblem (or as I call him, Warrior Jesus).
My friend didn't level Ike up at all in Path of Radiance because she has a weird fetish for those Laguz thingies, and then complained to me that the game was hard. Silly girl.

I try to level all my characters evenly, in case I need to/want to use a particular setup. That said, I prefer to use who I think is cool... role in the plot and, often, power/effectiveness be damned.

Some games, like Shadow Hearts, reward this attitude by giving me a main character who is both cool and powerful. Other games are Xenosaga.

Depends on the game, like in Chrono Trigger always use Crono, but in Final Fantasy 6, I don't really care as long as I have Cyan

Only if I like them, I favour characters that use swords and quite often that character is a main character. If I don't like a character they tend to never end up in the party E.G. Karol in Tales of Vesperia but Yuri (main character) was nearly always in my party because it's an action-RPG and he uses a sword. Depending on the game I might have the character that most fits the situation in the party, in games like Mass Effect you actually get a benefit from this so it's generally a good idea.

Yeah I use characters I like without worrying about who has the highest base strength or who makes the game easy by spamming a particular move (Arumat SO:TLH)

Well, Lethe did turn out to be one of my top performers (number 6, right behind Rolf, Boyd, Oscar, Titania, and Warrior Jesus).

Granted, my current experiment is to see if I can get my lowest character from that playthrough into the top five. All I can say is...wow, in order to do that, I'm gonna have to use Mist in a way that makes Hong Kong Phooey look like Batman.

I use Judith with Estelle, Rita and Yuri in my party, I mainly used Rita as she is the Mage but I found Judith is actually fun to use. Estelle is gaurenteed to never EVER leave my party, I even worry if I get ambushed and she isn't in. I don't know how long I would last without a healer to back up my reckless tactics.
