For them to truly be a race of creatures that could develop technology, they would have to have some kind of equivalent to the opposable thumb.

Not necessarily. It certainly is very helpful to us, but we really can't predict what tech they'd have- they would adapt the tech to their use.

No, of course they do not look like humans. They will probably look like monsters straight out of an H.P. Lovecraft story at least. The may even be solid geometric objects that just float around and communicate by pure mathematics, we do not know for sure.
I was skimming this thread and read that as "monsters straight out of an H.P. Hovercraft story".

Now all I can think about is what that might look like.

It most likely depends on the environment of the aliens in question. The bi-pedal, thumbed creatures that we are came about because of specific circumstances, so if another planet underwent similar environmental changes as Earth, then aliens could very easily be humanoid. Assuming we gain enough self control to not destroy ourselves first, the first aliens we would come across would most likely not be humanoid though, seeing how we have yet to discover an Earthlike planet anywhere near us

i believe they look humanoid, in that they likely would be bipedal, with the same amount of limbs, and have a similar stature and posture... but i they could be missing noses, ears, etc. have no body hair, or a high amount, large or small eyes, etc.

who knows :p

We do not know (but the government does).

Maybe or not

The ET experts say there are at least 6 different types of aliens on earth. some are good others are bad. I suspect the main reason the bad ones have not invaded us is because the good ones will not let them. Also, it can not be cheap to invaded a world. If it bleeds, it can die.
If it bleeds we can kill it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlicWUDf5MM

I doubt it but you never know. Lets first start off by finding some intelligent life.

I believe that it's one way or the other. Either they'll look like this:

(No, the aliens aren't John F. Kennedy, I'm just giving an example of a human)
Or they'll look like this:

I find it highly unlikely that another dominant race would be identical to humans. It wouldn't make sense, unless they developed at the same rate as us, on a world identical to our own in every way (see: evolution).

Incidently, Star Trek races are ridiculous. Ridiculous I say!

A humanoid figure would make sense. There is a reason we evolved into it- its incredibly effective.

Beyond that, probably no similarity.
Effective? At what?
At conquering the entire planet apparently.
I bet a race built like cougars who were just as intelligent could do just as well if not better than us.
A cougar does not have the physical capability to use tools. Any race that had enough intelligence to create a spear could defeat a race of cougars that had a human intellect.
Cougar people could develop their own version and make it a cougar spear since they're just as intelligent.

But they probably wouldn't need it since they have tactics in combat now, with much greater agility + the sharp teeth and speed that their cougarness provides.

Cmon, you know we'd have been screwed if Cougars could formulate plans.

.....I like the idea of cougar-people now.
As it is, a huge percentage of animals have the brain power required to realize that pointy objects kill things. However, the fact is, most do not have the ability to shape or use spears. While a race of cougar people would have better tactics than they do now, they would still most likely fall to spears which can be thrown or can be used to give whoever is using it incredible reach.
And the Cougars then use their human-intelligence to build shields.

It'd be us but with greater dexterity, agility, stamina, more fur, better vision, with claws and teeth thrown in.

Shit would be so over in the times when the spear was the pinnacle of technology. Nowadays.... guns may even the battlefield, but now Cougars have guns. :O
They could not fashion a shield. The lack the arm mobility or the strength in the opposable thumbs. For similar reasons, they would not have guns.
hello, it's called evolution. noone said they'd stay the same shape.

this poll leaves out percentages. maybe a couple of them do look like us, if only vaguely. but there's likely many more that don't, and we'd have little if any contact with most of that lot because we wouldn't have much in common, like the air we breathe, what we find pretty, comfortable atmospheric pressure and temperature. gass giant critters like massive zeppelins? slow, rocky critters the size of moons with lava for blood?

also, alway's pretty weird how people assume that there is somehow an intrinsic usefulness to humanoid form. just because it came out sorta on top on lowly Earth, does not mean it would have if we skipped an extinction effect or two, or that it would happen somewhere else just because it was [relatively] similar. squid people, or whale people with telekenetic abilities, anyone? some of you have also assumed the need for opposable thumbs. again, just because it happened here....

there are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of..

not only is there a humanoid race out there but there is probably another human race since there are almost infinite solar systems
Wouldn't be like an alternate reality? Like, could I go there one day and meet a hot, buxom, bisexual version of myself there and convince her to have intercourse withe me and another woman?

On a side note: Would that be considered sex or masturbation?

MOST aliens that have been designed are humanoid meaning they have arms, legs, a head, and a torso in the middle. This is mainly because the people who create them are often not 'creative' enough to think of anything else more interesting OR sometimes it's because when humans view drama they like it to be relate-able, even the villains.

Well look at our planet. Even if there is another planet in the universe that sustains life as well as ours does, there's not just going to be ONE SPECIES. I mean look at our world. We have cats, dogs, giraffes, zebras, horses, alligators, hippos, octopi, etc, etc.

So no, even if they did exist, the probablitiy of them looking like us is almost impossible.
