Well you can be pretty sure that the cows and chickens had a gender before they were turned into steak and chicken wings.
Well, let me be clear--gender is a societal construct. You're talking about sex, which is a biological construct. Also, I'm going to blow your mind, but men and women have XY and XX chromosomes. Chickens don't work that way--instead, the females have ZW while the men have ZZ. Essentially, their males are sex determined the way our females are. MADNESS.
Gender is a societal construct when applied to humans. When applied to animals it refers to the set of characteristics that distinguish between male and female entities: its biological sex.
Er, then it's called sex. It isn't called gender then. What frame of reference are you using? I'm using sociology/biology.
I'm saying that when it comes to animals gender and sex mean the same thing because animals don't have a social role or gender identity.
Right, but that's my point--those are two different concepts. Gender is not the same as sex, whether it applies to animals or humans. Gender is the social construct around genitalia. Sex is the genitalia and chromosomal makeup.

plants have genders. How do they breed? Look it up, back in horticulture in the early days of high school we learnt all about this and plants and stuff, but the thing is the plants have both genders on the same plant.

He speaks the truth. In many languages besides English, food does indeed have a gender. French and Spanish are good examples. Interestingly, beer is feminine in both cases.

Well I will say what I always say when it comes to something I have no stable or clear awnser on...

Fuck I don?t know...

OT: prejudice is prejudice from food too skin color so you cannot be entirely sure that 100% of the time you will be right then you risk being wrong and I don?t like being wrong (maybe that?s just me) so I think I will stay away from you assumption although you stereotyping does apply to me because I?m a man and all I eat is meat pasta and anything that I don?t need to cook (except sushi)

As a german that problem is already solved for me...
EVERYTHING has a gender here....even a stapler...he's male.
So if u ever feel confused ask me...

As for the stereotype thing: Its often right. Women tend to order salad, where her male counterpart likes to order a meal. Fortunately my last girlfriend was totally unaware of this and we had fun evenings at the restaurant...

Well the french do, as they find every noun needs a bloody gender.

A gender? Yes, because gender is a made up concept and humans are sad like that and need to categorise everything, even food.

That said there are exceptions to all the rules.

By the way, hyrulegaybar, women are also associated with eating buckets of ice cream when they're sad.
True, but guys are associated with eating buckets of ice cream just for the hell of it. At least, most of the guys I know do. Hell, we used to get tubs of Ben and Jerry's for lunch when I was in college.

I dont speak french but I know they apply Genders to foods and that is what I was thinking when the thread started.

But yes some foods are associated with different genders. For example my sister is the only girl who likes Pork Ribs whereas all the Men I know would devour them any day of the week.

The only way food could have a gender would be if:
1. One ate their food while it was still alive
2. The food while being eaten had what we come to accept largely as a whole as a gender

Amen. I still haven't quite figured out why my book is female, my coffee is male, and my bread is neutered.
