Right, but that's my point--those are two different concepts. Gender is not the same as sex, whether it applies to animals or humans. Gender is the social construct around genitalia. Sex is the genitalia and chromosomal makeup.Woem said:I'm saying that when it comes to animals gender and sex mean the same thing because animals don't have a social role or gender identity.hyrulegaybar said:Er, then it's called sex. It isn't called gender then. What frame of reference are you using? I'm using sociology/biology.Woem said:Gender is a societal construct when applied to humans. When applied to animals it refers to the set of characteristics that distinguish between male and female entities: its biological sex.hyrulegaybar said:Well, let me be clear--gender is a societal construct. You're talking about sex, which is a biological construct. Also, I'm going to blow your mind, but men and women have XY and XX chromosomes. Chickens don't work that way--instead, the females have ZW while the men have ZZ. Essentially, their males are sex determined the way our females are. MADNESS.Woem said:Well you can be pretty sure that the cows and chickens had a gender before they were turned into steak and chicken wings.
He speaks the truth. In many languages besides English, food does indeed have a gender. French and Spanish are good examples. Interestingly, beer is feminine in both cases.Christemo said:ask a Frenchman, and they´ll say yes( to anyone who speaks french, i think you know what i mean).
True, but guys are associated with eating buckets of ice cream just for the hell of it. At least, most of the guys I know do. Hell, we used to get tubs of Ben and Jerry's for lunch when I was in college.Skeleon said:By the way, hyrulegaybar, women are also associated with eating buckets of ice cream when they're sad.
I dont speak french but I know they apply Genders to foods and that is what I was thinking when the thread started.Christemo said:ask a Frenchman, and they´ll say yes( to anyone who speaks french, i think you know what i mean).
Amen. I still haven't quite figured out why my book is female, my coffee is male, and my bread is neutered.r0qu3 said:As a german that problem is already solved for me...
EVERYTHING has a gender here....even a stapler...he's male.
So if u ever feel confused ask me...
As for the stereotype thing: Its often right. Women tend to order salad, where her male counterpart likes to order a meal. Fortunately my last girlfriend was totally unaware of this and we had fun evenings at the restaurant...
