I mean as in the track length.

Music tracks I'd say average around 4 minutes. Is that long enough for you? Sometimes it can get annoying when you're just getting into a song and it ends. Also, does anyone know how long pieces of music would've been before the record industry came along? Some older Classic music goes on forever.

Also FIRST TOPIC here!

Usually I'd say it's enough, but for some genres (like prog, or some metal songs for example), it works better if it's longer.

Well I listen to a lot of progressive music, and that tends to be much longer.
If you listen to Opeth, the average song is at least ten minutes long.

It really depends on the genre though, a punk song for more than 3 or 4 minutes would really drag on.

4 minutes is just fine for me. I like that kind of length.

Its all depend on genre for me. Muse (what ever genre they are) have songs spanning from 3-8 minutes, and I happily listen to that.

I like my Metal long though, One by Metallica being a Favorite of mine.

Prog Rock/Metal is the way to go for longer music - the average Dream Theater song is about 9-20 minutes.

The average length of a song in my library is almost exactly 3:45. That's okay but I like my music to be a little longer, preferably about 4:15 or 4:30.

But it does depend on the genre. That is very true. I wouldn't want my pop songs lasting much longer than 3:30 and I hate when a good metal song is less than 4:00.

I never really cared, there are usually only certain parts of songs I like the most anyways.

Going with everyone else here. It really depends on the genre of music and the song. Prog Metal works better longer, Pop works better shorter, and everything else depends on the song.

It depends on the mood and feel. frankly, if I cut down "rooster" by alice in chains, Or any of teh over five minute songs by Demons and Wizards, I'd feel like i was taking away from the music, not streamlining it.

Though i think that while all songs are titled to their respective length, the crap Mr. West pulled by making a music video 45 mins long was too much (yes, I know, its a full album, that doesnt excuse the fact that it takes up the amount of time most decent movies would need to get to the epolouge of the plot.

It's what I'm used to, so I'm fine with it.

I'd rather have a good 3 1/2 minute pop song rather than an 11 minute progressive piece that ambles on forever with a bunch of ambient noises and keyboard solos...

my music ranges i have grindcore or "random yelling" as most people call it with songs from 30 seconds to 2 minutes
prog stuff (opeth and meshuggah) which have some really long songs 7-15 minutes) and technical death metal which is 4-5 minutes per song
and my electronic black metal (more electronic the black metal) ranges from 2-5 minutes
atm im hooked on some melodic hardcore (The Crimson Armada) most songs on their album are 4-5 minutes long

Well if they have a long song to write, they'll have a long song, like Kashmire. But personally I will get antsy if it goes on too long, even if it's good.

I'm happy whatever the length as long as the song itself is good. For example, one of my favourite songs a while back, though not so much anymore, was Cassandra Gemini, by The Mars Volta, which clocks in at around 32 minutes long. However, I'm also loving songs from bands like Metric and Florence & The Machine that last perhaps 2-3 minutes, or 4 minutes tops. As I say, it depends on the song and whether or not it's any good. I'd rather listen to two minutes of good stuff than half an hour of crap, but if the chance comes to hear half an hour of quality sounds then I'll jump at that chance :D.

Depends on the song. Sometimes that's just right while in others it is too short of too long. I think that trying to define "length" to music is a bit difficult. I'd say that it should be as long as necessary. What that is... depends upon the music itself.

I don't really have an oppinion since I don't listen to anything else but delicious metal, which tend to be a bit longer.

I know exactly what you mean. I have a habit of listening to music by the album; I'll listen to entire albums nonstop. The type of music I listen to lends itself to long songs not of typical pop music song structure, which assists in providing a listening experience that can put me in a euphoric trance for some time. I'm almost to that point right now, all I would need to do is take my attention off of my computer and just listen to my music.

Length does not determine whether music is good.

And, fwiw, the median song length in my library is 3:53.

I don't really mind music being short if it is something like hardcore punk, because they are such fast-paced songs. But other genres, like prog tend to work better with a long length, and I love that too.
