How would you style your hair like this? You've said some wort of wax? I've used this stuff called pomade before, and it seemed to give my hair a greasy styled look, rather than the dry-ish look achieved here.
For this particular kind of style, I'd recommend a fibre-gum based product. There's a lot of them around, but they are extremely flexible to style your hair and the better ones (VO5's Extreme Rework Fibre Putty for example) are very effective and quite cheap.
The idea behind a 'fibre' based product, is that once it sets, it becomes near invisible (the best ones can't even be felt on your hair), but maintains the hold/style you want. Matt clays and putties are OK as well, but have a tangible texture to them once they're on your hair, I always feel aware of having used such a product, so I stick to the fibre based ranges.
I myself have very thick hair and so I can't do much with it if I let it grow, unless I actually get it relaxed. However, when it's short-mid length, I can do almost any spiked/styled shaping I want with it... I'm starting to sound like a god damn advert, so I'll stop. =p
