I don't know what gels you've come across, but what you're describing sounds more like pomade to me.
Just... any gels look awful.
Says who? Who died and made you the resident arbiter elegantiarum? Also, how the fuck do you start a poll when right off the bat, you state that all people who choose one of the options are dickheads?

Just one question... how old are you?
Sooooo, I can't state an opinion? I specifically said I used to use it, and just found it wasn't for me? My opinion is the basis for this discussion. The poll is just for background information. That's kind of the point.

Don't be such a douche next time.

EDIT:
And you realise you got worked up over a thread about HAIR GEL. For God's sake, mate. Perspective is nice.

My hair demands some sort of control, as no matter the cut, unless I wear it much, much longer than I am comfortable with (over my eyes, for example), it tends to stick out in at least 20 random directions at once.

I used to use gel for this back in the day, but hated that sticky spiky sensation, and once it started loosening up, it just added a few extra dimensions to my already overtly cow-licked situation.

Then, I found a dab of conditioner in dry hair works spectacularly, without any of the drawbacks, and I've never gone back. All it does is get softer and softer as it dries. Feels nice, and keeps my cow-licks under control.

I use hair gel because my hair is horrible. What I mean is no matter what I do the hair at the front of my head will always stand up. So to compensate for this I have to keep my hair short and gel the rest of my hair up so I do not look like a pillock.

I use a dabble of Fudge to give it some texture, and the best bit is that it also smells like fucking caramel !, not that I've noticed that much...

And what you're describing sounds like they're wiping buckets of the stuff in.
Where does one get one of those :<
I agree, it sounds quite tasty :D

I mean, how else are you meant to feel about something called caramel-scented shaping fudge? Yummmm.

I like to style my hair by brushing it backwards from the crown of my head to the back. Naturally, my hair doesn't stick that way by itself, so I use some wax to keep it in place.

Other times I like to stick my hair up a bit. Wax solves that too. If chicks get away with hairsprays and curlers and straightners, I think I can get away with a bit of wax. A simple cut is boring.

When I was about 15-17 I used to use a gel to spike my hair right up about 4 inchs high.

I put gel in my hair to make it look a wet styled look like most of my friends. So i can style it the way i want and makes it look good in my opinion. Not sure what gel you have tried but they dont sound very good to be honest i use gel quite often and it has never clumped or gone sticky as it sounds like your using gel that was on the shelf 15 years ago. When i go out alot of blokes have some kinda wax or gel in there hair.I have had girls say that men that do not put stuff in there hair normally look like they have not made an effort and look "scruffy".

Also my hair seems to have a life of its own so if i do not put gel in my hair it goes fluffy and all over the place.

Hair wax man, that's where its at.

Holds better than gel, requires less to use, doesn't go off like gel does, if caught in the rain wont leave your scalp a greasy dripping mess, less obvious that hair gel.

It's seriously great, it just holds your hair there, it doesn't make it crunchy or greasy or anything.

Quoted for truth. Wax and fibre gum/putty gives you a dry-look hair style, which allows you to mould/spike/whatever your hair and leave it looking natural, rather than slick/wet.

With most good waxes/gums, you can re-mould your hair style/shape as you please too, so even if you don't get it right first time, you can just keep messing with it.

Though the OP appears to be suffering from a paranoia of using hair products because he probably hadn't used the right ones to begin with, this is more just a case of knowing what to use and how to use it.

^Two examples of how to use hair products properly.

I never use any sort of hair product, as I keep my hair short enough that you couldn't style it if you tried, even with hair gel. Ergo, no reason to mess about with chemicals, which suits me just fine. The only downside to this hair style is that sometimes random people decide to rub my head for luck or some such (no seriously, that actually happens).

My hair is incredibly thin, so a bit of gel works miracles for me. Without gel is really unmanageable. Too much makes it look greasy yeah, so don't go ape. Lately I've been switching to wax, but not quite yet convinced.

I used gel when I was 14 to 15. Just had spikey hair back then. I can't really remember the actual name, but the gel was a Loreal product. I washed everyday, my hair was never greasy and it wasn't uncomfy.
But then I just got fed up of the style, isn't really a good one unless you're under 16.

I dislike people who use lots of it. You like like you're in a 90's boyband.
And that makes you larger than life!
[sub]Couldn't resist.[/sub]

But really, a lot of guys look a hot mess with medium/long hair and no hair product.

I do, you can't have a proper mohawk without it.

That's not me, but mines about the same length.

Hey there guys, I just wanted to address something I've been noticing a lot lately...
Hair gel. I hate it.

I find it disgusting. It plasters your hair into little sticky, stiff strings that stick to your scalp or lay on top. It looks especially bad with medium to longish hair, where it just makes it look greasy and dirty. It looks very unattractive. I cannot understand why people use it.

Making hair look nice is all about the cut. Get a decent cut, make sure you wash it and condition it frequently (every couple of days in my case, I exercise a lot), and straighten it if it's your style. You don't have to shape it with this chemical goop every morning.

I have not met a single girl who likes it when guys wear hair gel. One girl even told me it makes guys look like tossers.

Now, having said this, I went through a bout of wearing hair gel for a couple of months. Now I can't stand the stuff. It makes me shudder when I have to look at the back of some guy's greasy, sticky head every morning on the bus. It doesn't exactly feel nice either! Do you want a girl to have to wipe her hand off if she plays with your hair? Not cool.

Anyways, I just want to hear some reasons or opinions.
How do you feel about hair gel? If you DO use it, why?
This:

Is superior to this?

Ridiculous. Girls might find it "cool" or "hip" - LADIES don't.

I think you can only buy them in barbers/hair dressers (I'm in England by the way), but it's a pretty popular brand in them, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find.

Or just order a pot online.

At the minute I use it every day because my hair's kind of short. I never use it when I grow my hair out though.
