How does the escapist community feel about social networking websites? I don't mean things like the escapist forums (though I love 'em); I mean the popular social networking websites like Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Do you guys use them much, or are they just a waste of time and effort? Are they just fads, or will almost everyone have them in the future? I'm from America, so are there other popular ones in your part of the world? Just F.Y.I., I did use the search button. :)

Personally, I think they're great. They help me stay connected since most of my friends live a good hour away from me.

I've been a bit of a facebook junky lately, no real reason just something to occupy time.

I use facebook mainly because I grew up 3500 kilometers away from where I now live and it's a good way to see what the people I was friends with or went to school with are upto all these years later.

I do use them, primarily to keep in touch with school friends and a few people I met while abroad. It's good for when you haven't got the time, or enough to say to write an e-mail. I was addicted for a while when I had nothing to do, but it soon passed and now I just chat to people.

I use one, Hyves. It's dutch and kinda like myspace from what I know. I am not very active on it, only with people I also know in the real world, don't really feel the need to have a massive online social network. It'll probably just run out of popularity after some years, I dunno.

Before I get onto the main topic I would like to ask people to refrain from flaming and insta-hate posting. Please read the full comment and THEN give a BALANCED argument against or for my on argument. Flaming does not help the discussion and just shows your own stupidity at the lack of being able to form a coherent thought. Thankyou for not being a retard ^_^

I've never understand peoples obsession with such shallow sites like Myspace or Facebook. To me they just seem to be sites designed for people who arent very special at all (Except in idiocy) to advertise (whore) themselves out on the net and make themselves feel special even though they arent. Its a very shallow self image network really instead of being a social network. Instead of conversing they mostly spend their time uploading pictures of the previous nights money wasted boozing (Yup great pic there of you throwing up on that bouncer) and their endless obsession with getting more friends on their lists even though it's people they've never met and never will! They just randomly spam people with friends requests. have these people NO selfrespect at ALL?!

You can tell I dont think very highly of such sites or the people that use em ^_^
But thats just my opinion.

Don't use them, and I avoid them like the plague. Don't see the point of shoving my face onto the internet for other peoples entertainment.

If people want to talk to me, do it over the medium of soundwaves.

Facebook and Twitter, if you get most of your friends to use either of these, they can be quite fun,

That's just generalizing the entire user group isn't it? I use Facebook and I am quite certain I don't fall under that stereotype. Sure I upload photos but I primarily use it to keep in touch with people. It's just convenient what with people being too busy to catch up and so on.

I do however agree with you that there are people like that on these sites. Countless friend requests I have denied from complete randoms.

I have been using the Facebook for about a few months now. I've got about 40 friends, of which about 50% can actually be considered friends IRL.

I can't say I have any particalar gripes with the service, as it helps you stay in touch with people you long thought dead, and stay in touch with people when you're outside the country and such and so forth.

Though I am disturbed about how many people put up photos of their friends on the site, so now everywhere we go we're sort of expected to put on a show for the phone cameras which are brandished. Our lives are now a matter of public record, that part of it is quite disturbing.

No. It has been sucking the souls of my sister & mother away lately. I don't want that happen to me.

I use Facebook and Myspace. I used to go on my Myspace all the time but that's started dying not unless it's for a band. Facebook is awesome.

I have a Facebook but I'm not going to say I use it. I only got it since my sisters (who I've only ever met once and live on the other side of the country from me) convinced me to but they don't even use it anymore so there's no reason for me to use it now so I don't.
