We have multiplayer, we have high speed fiberoptic broadband that runs faster than Jesus over a duckpond, and we have Turtle Beach USB-powered surround sound headsets with mics of higher quality than some TV shows.

But do these things add up? Do you voicechat?

Personally, I don't. I'm not a classy man, but I'm told by many that I sound posh. Knowing that that's a red flag on XBL (along with having any kind of accent, etc) I avoid it, unless online with someone I know very well. Apart from that, I've even muted everyone else. I made that decision after listening through a BlOps match to a British boy and an American boy arguing about wars. When the American boy was rebuffed for bringing up WW2, his ingenious reply was;

'Yeah well we kicked your ass in the colonial war'

At which point I realised how bloody inane these people are (idiots, not Americans. Idiocy was prevalent on both sides of the argument, British and American). I could stands no more, so everyone has been muted.

TL;DR, Do you see any point in chat?

There wasn't a poll option for me: I want to, but I can't. I bought a headset when I first got MW2, hoping to get some more tactical playing going in the team games, but in my whole time playing that game I never once heard anyone else using the chat. I've had pretty much the same experience with Bad Company 2, no chat at all, except for a couple of people speaking a language that I couldn't recognise.

I suppose I probably need to join a clan or something, but I always think I'd feel under to much pressure then, and would be unable to enjoy myself properly. Still at least it's better than the XBL situation; better to have silence than racist comments.

Only to people I know.

And only on PC, wouldn't talk on Xbox live, even if my life depended on it.

This.
I never talk on Xbox or any other online voice chat. Except for Ventrilo and Skype, but that's just with friends.

I only talk on certain games or with my friends. For instance, I know how ridiculously fucking stupid most of the people who play Black Ops are, so I don't bother trying to talk to them. However, if I'm playing TF2, I will talk all I want.

I think by now a lot of the community has taken the 'mute everyone' option, I noticed with a lot of MW2 when I played it that very few people spoke. In fairness, with such fast-paced games it doesn't seem like there's much need for tactical chat. It's usually 'there's someone he-*dead*' or similar.

BC2, unless I'm mistaken, you can only hear your squad. Like I say, I may be wrong on that. But if it is the case, it lowers your chances even further of getting a chatter.

If you have your headset on, it can be worth asking at the start if anyone's got their voice on. If they hear a reasonable request, some people will actually come out of hiding in the hope of gaming with a reasonable, non-dickish player.
