I like to think im not a supersticious person, but lately as ive been walking down my garden ive found myself sidestepping to avoid walking under the ladder we have set up. its got me wondering just how strange that is, so what would you do it that situation?

Yes i do. I also like to walk over them, around them and up them just to spice things up. One day i would like to do a cartwheel over one, that is my dream.

Assuming there is no one up said ladders at the time then I have no issues what so ever.

Also I will gladly spill as much salt as you like, break many mirrors and have any number of black cats cross my path.

Even ignoring superstition, common sense tells me not to.
You could knock it over and cause all kinds of chaos. And some have horizontal support strut things which could coathanger you if you don't watch where you're going.

This.

There isn't exactly that much space beneath a ladder, why not just walk around it?

While I'm not superstitious, I try not to walk under ladders after this one time I knocked one over. If it's convenient then I'll still do it, just more carefully.

No. I find that it increases the likelihood of things being dropped on you. I know it doesn't really make sense, and that the concept of luck has no place in a rational society, but sometimes these things can't be explained. The facts just correlate.

Sure, because face it; superstition is foolish. Come on folks, this isn't the Middle Ages any more.

And because a falling ladder falls backwards, walking under a ladder sounds like the safest thing you could do when having to pass a ladder.

No. Not for superstitious reasons, I'm just very clumsy.
Probably catch the bottom with my foot and break something.

no, I might knock into them and either hurt myself or the person on the ladder.

If I can fit under it, and it's in my way, then yes. I really couldn't care less about people thinking it's bad.

Same here. I have no superstitions that correlate to old wives tales. I do, however, have ones that I seem to have made up over the years and I have no idea why. For example, whenever I pass by a cemetery, I have to say "bread and butter" or I get a bad feeling in my stomach. I can't remember the first time I did it and I can't tell you why I do it, but if I don't, I feel like something bad will happen. Another one is that, when I'm walking down the sidewalk and have to cross train tracks, I just can't bring myself to cross at the same time that a car is passing over them. This actually came from when I was a kid and lived right behind some train tracks; it became a game for me when I was coming home from school, running and trying to beat the cars to the train tracks. It just sort of evolved over the years and now I can't be on the tracks at the same time as a car...or a train, but that's a different situation altogether. :p
