I don't play games online at all. So, the answer from me is a definite no. I like multiplayer for the ability to play against a friend or my brother, but I very rarely ever touch it, so its not something I factor into my game purchases at all.

It's all about the singleplayer :)

No, but a game can only benefit from the addition of good multilayer, depending on the game of course.

Online is a pretty big part of gaming, and will probably become a bigger and bigger part as we become more able to utilise the internet to enhance game-play. Note, I said enhance, not make up, so while it may be a pivotal in enhancing a games features, if it doesn't have good features t begin with, the game will still be nothing. Off line game-play will live on, but it will become severely diminished in the years to come.

Your poll is stupid, it gives no option to say "Its not needed but it can make the experience better sometimes."
IT ANGERS ME. Online is good, but developers need to know whether they it is actually make it possible to make a good and lasting online gamemode that isn't just a cheap and a "Bonus" take any popular single-player game and people will say "GIMME ONLINE."
Tehan, You're stupid. Option 3, it isn't needed, but certainly inhances the experience.

No it isn't needed and in fact can be harmful to the game itself. I can't count the number of games that left me feeling ripped of by the single player experience because they had to include some type of crappy multiplayer or suffer the wrath of "proffesional" reviewers. MP has a time and a place but is not needed in every FPS (sports, fighting and racing games hell yes). I think MP should be a DLC experience only. That way it doesn't take up valuable disc real estate

Baldr's Gate, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, Oblivion, endless platformers (Mario and Sonic) and Doom are just a few of the many very successful single-player games. Games like the Total War Series, Age of Empires and Diablo-esque games don't rely on multiplayer to be critical hits and deep experiences.
This.

I avoid online games.

I'd ponder playing an online game if gamers in general were less prone to asshattery. As that is about as likely as Jack Thompson growing a brain, I'm staying away....I deal with enough idiots and jerks at work...I don't need to bring them home via my recreation.

I don't think it s absolutely necessary for games to have online play. True, most of my favorite and most replayed games do, but most does not include all. One of my favorite games, Psychonauts, has no online or even multi-player features, and it manages just fine. I think a really well developed and fun to play story make interaction with other players less necessary, and in the case of some games would in fact be a burden.

It really depends on the game. FPS games seem to do better if they have a good online portion, but a single player game, like the original Condemned (I know it is first person, but I cannot call it a shooter), is still awesome without online play.

My brother has been long trying to convince me to play online with him and his friends. I still say no, because I don't need to deal with the juvenile screaming, name calling, slurs, and questions pertaining to my bra size.

Last night my opinion was reaffirmed when my brother related the following story.

One of the people on his team was a girl *gaspshockhorror* which shocked another player on the team. He made a few snide comments but remained mostly silent until he decided it would be ever so witty if he put on a valley girl voice and started talking "like a girl."

Him: "Oh MYGAWD! I broke a nail! I was like at the mall and he was like there and HE IS SOOOOO CUTE!!! What's like halo? Is it like a new store or something? How do you spell that for my like tramp stamp?"

My brother: "What are you doing?"

Him: (to the girl) "You understand me I'm talking girl, so now do you get it?"

Wow, that guy is human skum. It really is unfair that people everyday are being discriminated against in a sexist manner like that. Just enjoy the game though, and don't mind the assholes.

if they tack it on it's usually going to suck but if they use it well like in cod4 it's cool but even better would be a cod as a stand alone online game no single player

Pretty much every RPG goes without online and they all do fine. I dont play the online on most games, i have never played an RTS against a human oppenent who is not in the same building as me, i have been playing RTS's since Red Alert and age of empires.

So we should pay for multiplayer like in resident evil 5?

Agreeing with the masses here, it ain't necessary, but games like Oblivion and Assassin's Creed would greatly benefit from having multiplayer..

No, and on a side note I usually don't think a good multiplayer makes up for a sub-par single player.

Depends on the game, I wouldn't ever say a game NEEDS it although it can certainly add to its re playability.
Like H.A.W.X I finished it on the hardest difficulty on my PS3 and afterwards only really had the Multi player left to keep me playing,
A game like Oblivion would never work even if it was limited to say an Arena still the game was just too PvE focused for that to work. same with Assassins creed, Fallout 3, Mass Effect and so on single player games deserve to be single-player and some FPS games can use online as a cool feature..

P.s just one thing, Don't Assume that because you have online that you don't need 2 player on the game locally, so many times it annoys me when the only way I can play a game with a friend is if they have it as well.
