On TV/anime/whatnot (media basically), anger/rage seems to have a 'powerful' meaning. For example, you're losing a battle in Street Fighter, but then you tell your friend "OK, that's it. Now I'm -mad-, prepare yourself!". Or you're an underdog in a rap-content, but then you get 'mad' cause someone insulted your sister or something, and then you do fantastic in the rap-battle.

OK, those were pretty random examples, but what say you Escapist? Does anger really give you 'power'? Because in every instance I've experienced, it's been the opposite. I'm thinking more like "dang it, augh. I'm getting angry, it's going to screw me up". For example in Street Fighter, I've noticed that whenever I get angry/want-to-win, it makes me play infinitely worse. I would assume a rap-battler would do worse while being angry as well, because they wouldn't be able to focus. I mean, that's the whole point of -taunting- someone in the first place isn't it? To get them mad/disheveled?

Your thoughts?

Depends on the game. Generally I screw up on the first (and second) try to "get revenge" and than I beat it.

I'm pretty sure fear can give you super powers or something. Something to do with the body releasing endorphins or sumin' like that.

Doesn't help me in life; I recently came close to losing one of my best friends (though at this point I'm not sure it would have been a huge loss, but regardless) as a consequence of losing my head.

Thus, I'm very glad that Powerlifting provides such a productive way to release my negative energy. Only times I ever get enraged or depressed are when extraneous circumstances stop me from picking up heavy things.

Anger and rage makes me want to break stuff, which is a good stress relief. I don't like being angry, but it happens.
But I rarely get in to such a state of anger because of TV or games.

Usually the angrier I am, the better I get at certain games. Maybe it's the adrenaline.

It helps me during kickboxing training when I'm doing punching/kicking drills, or when I'm working out in general. Yesterday, I was at kickboxing after 5 days of not being able to train because of work. I was pissed off from not being able to train for so long, and as a result, I put more power and speed into my punches, and push myself harder. However, anger hinders me when I'm required to do something that requires care or precision.

So in short, in real life:

Rage
+ Strength, Speed, & Endurance
- Dexterity

If I'm riding my bike (or karting) when I get angry, absolutely. The extra aggression translates into hit everything faster syndrome.

Other areas of life, not so much.

Anger (especially in arguments) generally makes you do stupid things or make stupid mistakes.

Predetermined anger however (like if you dont like someone, or want to get angry at someone because they've done something to you that you want to confront them about) can be very effective, especially if you're not a typically angry person.

It depends.

If I'm playing video games, then it makes me really bad at them.

If I'm playing rugby though, shit better get out of my way, because nothing's gonna stop me.

No, anger is not good. It makes me say things I normally would not have said, it breaks the flow on whatever I'm trying to do and if I'm doing anything fysical I end up using a lot more force that I should be using, resulting in quick tiredness. Not a bad thing sometimes, but whatever calm and peace of mind it brings I can achieve via other means.

Anger drives me harder to accomplish something.

Anger also makes me unable to control myself. Trust me, that makes me a danger to mankind.

Depends...

Being pissed off or 'mad' is generally good, because I lose inhibitions, and do seem to become faster and stronger, while my mind becomes razor-sharp

On the other hand, blind rage is always an inconvenience, making my less able to think, and a lot less skilled in just about everything
