Theres no option for intrumental or celtic so I just went for Rock, particularly 80's rock. Metal is a close behind.

My tastes dwell in the realm between rock and metal, with some forays into classical and techno. I guess you could say my music was mainstream at one time, since I listen to stuff like AC/DC, Aerosmith, etc.

I like music that was considered mainstream 30-40 years ago :)

Led Zep, AC/DC, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Journey, Queen etc etc

As for now the only mainstream band I like are The Red Hot Chili Peppers and before that (10 years ago) Blink 182. It's not like I hate on things because they are popular, it's just that most of the popular bands around now that I've heard do nothing for me musically. I'm sure there's plenty of popular stuff I haven't heard that I'd like though and of course there will be stuff in the future I'll like that's popular. Nowadays I mainly listen to Metal (mainly Melodic Death/Black metal, Progressive Metal, Tech Death Metal, 80's style heavy metal/power metal and Thrash/Groove Metal), some electronic music (trance, house, some dubstep)and classic rock of the aforementioned bands (among others).

Been listening to electronic music and nothing else for my entire life to the point where I just can't "get into" other broad genres. Nothing wrong with specialization I guess but it doesn't help when identifying with people when they say they love "Techno" but really mean house or trance.

It's also fun when people say Electronic music is repetitive. All music is repetitive, with some exceptions I don't know about, no broad genre is more repetitive than any other.

I'm into mostly Late 80's and early 90's Grunge and Alternative... mostly 80's indie stuff... I find that almost all 80'smusic is just way too silly to be enjoyable and almost everything after Nirvana's popularity faded to be shallow and boring... though I've always had a soft spot for 60's music... Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, The Ventures, The Shadows etc...<.<

I usually prefer something with what I would call "real" instruments. Now I'm not trying to put down more modern means of producing sound, but that's just my own personal definition. Now, I can maybe tolerate a couple of modern tunes, but a lot of the music I hear that is popular nowadays either doesn't interest or just inspires feelings of rage within me (Katy Perry, please stop it). Now, I don't hate these songs because they're mainstream. They are songs that I hate AND are mainstream. One is not a cause of the other.

Gonna have to be like everyone else on this website at quote yahtzee.

"Some times popular things are popular for a reason" - ZeroPunctuation

Some people just genuinely enjoy that kind of music, which is totally fine, It's just not for me.

I'm personally into rock but I don't condem people for liking what's considered main stream and neither should anyone else.

Really quite a shame, how is this not music in its purest form?

Though I do enjoy examples from all genres, electronic is second to jazz because Ronald Jenkees and miracles happen when the two are mixed ala goldfish.

I like a few 'mainstream' songs. Not most of them but you have to admit a lot of them are catchy.

Lately I've actually been listening to rap the most :O

I know, but I think it is underservedly hated by us nerds. I have a newfound liking for it after listening to The Notorious B.I.G and Eminem. There is some good rap music out there.

Good point. I guess I thought of mainstream pop only in the likes of Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and the artists who has more looks than music, mostly. Mainstream pop is a very broad genre.
I guess I should mention that I like some Katy Perry as well...
Yeah, I agree with this. Her looks that is! Zing!

When no-one in your class says they like mainstream music it's because they're all trying to pretend to be dark and edgy and don't really know what the fuck mainstream music is. They think they're cool for listening to music that isn't mainstream, but most of them listen to the same music so that kinda makes the music they're listening to mainstream.

When it comes to me and mainstream music I like some of the newer Rise Against and Anti-Flag (I love the other less mainstream style though) so I don't really listen to what the majority would call mainstream. I know I sound like a hipster, but it's just that I don't like techno or pop and that's what people around here listen to for the most part.

If the question was, "DO I like mainstream music?" then the answer would be, "some of it, but as a general rule, no."

However if you are asking "Does anyone like mainstream music?" I would have to say. "DUUUUHH-erk! I mean, of course, that's what makes it mainstream, it appeals to a large fan-base thus people like it."

Our English class had a recent survey on what type, and what generation of music you like. The question in hand was if anyone actually enjoys listening to mainstream music in the U.S, specifically in the pop genre. Most songs released nowadays have suggestive and very stupid lyrics, and the music and singing voice is often modified by electronics. So we took this survey and it turns out almost no year tens in our school like mainstream pop music. Most preferred classic rock or rap (I'm more into jazz personally). I'm guessing it's similar for all people. If that's the case, then why is this crap played everywhere? it's there all the time in public events and dances. Can't people play other music?

Edit: everyone raises a good point, and I got really disoriented, I guess. So what's everyone's favourite music genre?
It's played everywhere because it's actually the most popular and well liked kind of music. It is however "cool" to be seen to dislike whatever is doing well in the mainstream to prove your not one of the pack.

Probably 99% of those people going off about their music tastes are trying to seem cool and edgy and most of them are really into all the popular stuff that they claim to hate or disdain. The more elitist and indie someone claims to be, the more likely they go home and crank up some Justin Bieber or whatever they claim to dislike when they are alone. :p

The basic truth is that the music industry is a cash machine, it produces what sells, and is willing to dispose of talent very rapidly to make as much money, as fast as possible. If the popular stuff wasn't actually popular it wouldn't be making money and thus wouldn't be being produced. You can tell simply by the numbers, and it's existance, that the majority of people your dealing with are liars.

I'm a big fan of rock and metal but somehow I'm in a small minority where I live.
Almost everyone I work with is constantly whistling or humming some ridiculous pop/hip-hop/rap song and it drives me nuts.

As far as I can tell, mainstream music's target audience is people who don't know or care enough about music to have preferences.
Quite an interesting observation you've made, and it's likely to be mostly true.

Jazz.
All the way.
Because John Coltrane makes me moist.
As does Miles Davis.
And Cannonball Adderley.
And Bill Evans.
And Wynton Kelly.
And Jimmy Cobb.
And Paul Chambers.
Now.....if only there was an album that brought all of these brilliant musical talents together.....why, it would be, perhaps, the best album ever! Owned by almost everyone ever! Revered around the world for its genuine excellence!
Ah well.....one can only dream....

I haven't willingly listened to the radio for over 5 years. That should tell you everything you need to know about my attitude towards modern music.

I do like some modern mainstream pop, like Lady Gaga. Not a particularly big fan though. I much prefer rock and metal (hard rock being my favorite). Recent bands or old bands, it doesn't matter. I like both.

Well I like a variety, but my favorite band by far is Nine Inch Nails, so... Industrial/Rock/Alternative/Other?

Some things I listen to are hard to categorize.

Im a metalhead but enjoy the occasional Bach.
OT though, a while ago there was a study suggesting artists like Lady Gaga use a system to predict which songs will be listened to most. Long story short : certain sounds helps the brain produces dopamine or ceratonin and pop music is scarily effecient at it. Its kinda like a high, your brain like Justin Bieber's voice even if your prefrences shy away from him
