Poll: Does Batman really need Robin?

Bruce Wayne tends to have as much personality as a board... especially in the new movies. Robin tends to shake things up, and adds a new dynamic to Batman. However, this is often played out in a laughable, juvenile manner so Robin gets a bad wrap... also... terrible costume. But truth be told, the same can be said for any Batman character, there are some portrayals of the Joker, Riddler, etc which are just downright silly.

That being said, I think a more serious portrayal of Robin is fully possible. The question is would the public who largely only knows Robin from cartoons and the old Adam West TV series be willing, and able, to give it a chance. Move over, I don't feel that at this point he could be effectively worked in, since it'd pretty much require a movie of its own.

Personally, I think it's time to move past Bruce Wayne, Robin, etc... and move on to Terry McGinnis.

Question to OP, have you ever read the comics much? Because he's certainly not there to make things family friendly.

Plus Dick became one of my favorite DC heroes, Nightwing. So if it led to eventual movie potential for Nightwing, then HELl to the YEAH!

He doesn't have to be the goofy boy wonder, look at how Batman has evolved across the ages.

Actually, batman is certifiably insane, and many of the comic writers of recent years have stressed this. Its also part of his relationship with the Joker: the Joker is really just Batman with a different focus (Batman is focused on absolute Justice, while the Joker is... well, Joker).

And WHICH Robin would you recommend, OP? There's been several, all with different personalities.

He was good in other Batman series, but adding him into this one would just be stupid. I also don't like the original reason Robin was added to the story. Robin was first added in 1940 to make Batman family friendly. To make him less scary so that he'd appeal to more readers. Robin turned Batman from a psychologically deep, tormented character into the father from Leave it to Beaver. Batman's dark, sadistic, and mean. Robin forces him to focus on raising a son, and while it's really good in several incarnations, I want there to be a dark, serious Batman where he can just focus on his war on crime.
-Robin also causes us to focus on the allegations of child abuse. Was Batman wrong to push Robin into a brutal training regiment to prepare him for combat? If there's no Robin, we don't ask this question. Notice The Batman sucked, but it sucked more when they added Robin and Batgirl.

Movie Bob said something during his review of The Losers that made me cringe: he actually proposed that the current Batman movie series should have Robin. I don't think that Batman needs Robin. Robin makes him less dark and brooding. Robin makes Batman family friendly. Batman is crazy, determined, and kinda sadistic. Robin waters him down, makes him less awesome. Do you want Batman to have Robin? Would you still watch the current Batman movies if they introduced Robin? No flaming, no trolling, just polite debate. Go.

Why does he need Robin?

Robin keeps batman from going going over the dark end. You want an example of that? Back in 1988, there was this Mniseries called Batman: the Cult, Long story shot batman is brainwashed into killing a Innocent man who he was believe was two face. After escaping (and stealing food from a Deli, because he thought all the food was drugged) He head home, cries and wonder what's the point of being Batman. Jason Todd (The 2nd robin) walked up to him, Verbally ***** slapped him...and damn near said: "You're the goddamn Batman, you inspired fear in people, so Nut up, grab your suit and find that S.O.B."

Needless to say, That series was awesome.

Anyway, The whole Idea of Robin is just a way to make sure Batman dosen't go overboard.

Beside, Tim drake version of Robin is the best, he pretty much made it awesome to be Robin.

Of course Batman needs Robin. He's the only thing keeping him sane but then you get those awesome moments when Batman nearly looses it because of Robin, somewhat. Like when the Joker killed Jason. Batman is so breakable and thrusting Robin into Joker's hands only makes the stories more interesting. And some of the Robins are incredibly interesting, like Damien nowadays and Dick Grayson back in the day. However, I don't think they'll put Robin in the movies. I doubt they'll add Dick Grayson as Batman into the newest movie so there isn't much hope in them following the comic's continuity by putting Robin or Nightwing in. I think they made a big mistake with Robin in Batman and Robin, same as Batgirl and hopefully they see they can be great characters. In the movies Batman has a big "lone ranger" thing going on when in the comics he really isn't. He has Alfred, Dick, Oracle, Commissioner Gordon amongst others. He's Batman because he wants to protect those he loves, Gotham city itself included, and taking Robin out of the mix completely somewhat spoils things.

I agree with AT on this one. Batman is a nutjob. Alan Moore stated about Rorsarch that he wrote the character like he was Batman but in the real world, in other words, Looney Tunes.

Also, I'm going to nominate Tim Drake as the best Robin, because in the comic continuity anyway, it's stated by Batman himself that while Dick Grayson was in it for the fun, and Jason Todd was in it for the release of his anger, Tim Drake wants to be the world's greatest detective, and Batman thinks he really could be. Imagine that sort of Robin, not useless in a fight, not a constant bad guy bait, and actually good at deduction.

Christan Bale and Christopher Nolan both REFUSE to participate in the Batman movies if Robin comes in. So it a mute point.
