the steam servers don't work at Victoria Unversity, what I think would be nice is a data base of the places that Steam works. So do the poll, and say where or not it works. Please

I've never had any issues with using Steam at my university (that's York, UK, for reference). It's a more consistent connection there, and a little bit faster as well.

I can view the store and purchase things but I can't download them and whenever I try to edit my account it always says I've signed in on a different computer from last time.

GOG works fine, so I've just been getting stuff of that for when I'm bored.

It's kind of funny, really. I work for my school as a computer lab "monitor"--basically I'm paid $8/hour to open and close a computer lab. For 16 hours a week, I'm in the lab just playing on the computer. The only tasks I have to accomplish are opening the lab, closing the lab, keeping the printer stocked with paper, and turning in the key when I'm done. I also have to be in there throughout my shift, to help with any issues the students might have and making sure nobody steals anything. Basically, I'm paid to be a warm body in the lab.

Naturally I don't spend all of my time doing responsible stuff like homework, so I found a way to install Steam on the computer. The school has it to where you can't install new applications without administrator permission (which only professors have), but lucky for me the lab is full of Macs and there is a convenient little workaround I've discovered. To get Steam (or anything) to install on the Macs, you just have to install them to another place apart from the Applications folder. I installed it to the desktop rather than Applications, and voila. Instant Steam.

So the answer is yes, Steam does work in my university computer labs. Well, on the Macs anyway. I still haven't figured out how to get it to work on the Windows computers yet, but I also don't have much of a reason to at this point.

I haven't been to college in years and years so I haven't a clue.

You make me feel old, Smurf. "Evil"...it should be your middle name.

Normally - no, but you can request the ports to be unblocked [https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711] and it does. Or I guess you can do it through VPN. I just find it more of a hassle.

I can only play games offline! So I played a spot of GTA3.

It works perfectly fine at my university. If I remember on the Steam forums there was a thread listing all universities and whether Steam was usable or not.

Steam works fine at my university here at Keele (UK). There's an anoying daily download limit but it's fine if I'm willing to accept a game will take a few days to DL.

Back in the olden times when I was at University Steam wasn't really a thing yet. However there was a constant lack of computers in the building, so I can imagine someone getting a beatdown if you would be using a computer for games while people were desparately trying to find a free one to do actual uni work on.

Yeah, it works. My university (Delft University of Technology) generally isn't that strict about its data traffic. As far as I know, there are bans on uploading (temporary ones on first offenses) but other than that you can do whatever you want.

The internet isn't that amazing there (~20Mb/s down), so I generally don't use it for anything taxing anyway. I prefer my home internet.

Really? Delft used to have amongst the fastest internet speeds of all Dutch Unis. Then again this sounds like they haven't upgraded since when I started.

Also: Another Delftian Escapist?! I thought they were a myth!

They are a myth, I'm not really here, shhhh! ^^

The have upgraded, they just made a total mess of it. Apart from bandwidth, the big problem with the internet in Delft is that the coverage sucks, with one faculty having way better connections than others (damn civil engineering!). ^^

Steam is wonky at my uni. It'll work sometimes and be blocked every other day. If the game requires online multiplayer though? Forget about it.

Sucks cause I want to get a few League matches inbetween classes but that's been blocked since the game came out I bet.
