Poll: Does this world need superpower people?

I once did a thread on why such a universe would suck. I said the taxes alone to fix the damage after a superhero and supervillain fight would be huge. Seriously, you could expect your income taxes to be double or more what they are due to constant repair work. Yeah, they'd be awesome and spectacular fights but the damage to infrastructure and lose of life would be immense.

So, no, I guess we don't. But a man can dream. Oh, things I'd do with superpowers... Uh, I'd stop criminals. Yeah... THAT'S what I'd do.

No, because would every person use their power for good? I know I wouldn?t. If I could arc lightning out of my finger tips Sith style, I would not be a hero. I would take advantage of my power. I would sit there and say, ?I am a Greek god that walks among men. Bow before me.? Then I would probably be taken out by military forces. *sighs*

I'm guessing you went the infamous route in inFamous 1 and 2.

Indeed. Oftentimes Lex makes good points regarding such things. The one I like most is his asking what point is there to human ambition when HE (Superman) is out there. What point is there to making advancements when ANYTHING that humans do is STILL miles behind what HE can do?

On Topic...I think you'd seriously get chaos. I'm not a huge fan of the power always corrupts idea, but in this case I think it has a fair chance of being true. People right now are doing heroic things on a small scale, but what makes Superman the icon that he is to the people is not exactly what he CAN do, but what he chooses NOT to do. More than once the story has been told of Zod or some other Kryptonian coming to Earth and basically imposing their will on the populace, only to be shut down by Superman or something else and learning the error of their ways. Now on the surface I know that seems like just some warm and fuzzy feel-good story, but it's actually a greater part of what makes Superman the person he is because more than any physical ability, he WALKS that tightrope every day. He contents himself to be a maid and not a monarch. In the larger perspective, I can't even IMAGINE how much discipline that would take to NOT go "dammit! I've cleaned up this mess HOW MANY TIMES?! THAT'S IT! If you lot won't act right on your own, for your own good, I will MAKE YOU."

All it takes is one bad day, I think. Then you're off the tightrope and into the Age of Apocolypse, or Red Son, or well...you get the idea. If you DIDN'T end up with someone like that, you'd end up....well, let's just say while I have criticisms of Watchmen, one thing I though Alan Moore hit the nail on the head on was Dr. Manhattan. His views on life and reality changing due to his elevated powers and nature seem very sensible and natural.

So what do you get if you give people superpowers? Possibilities, really. Possibility of peace, chaos, iron-fisted monarchs for our own good, aloof and uncaring deities...

Some good things, many not so good.

No. A thousand times, no. I'm unnerved by how many people I know that chose the evil ending in Infamous 2, and you can bet that that is how the real world would end up. Those that have, and those that don't.

I would love the ability to fly though. That would be awesome.

No, it really doesn't. The reason is simple enough: I think if most of us were honest with ourselves, were we given superpowers we wouldn't be playing the role of super hero. The only thing that keeps most of us from villainy is the threat of some sort of repercussion.

Do these hypothetical heroes share my beliefs about everything?

I mean, suppose they were all keen on justice and freedom and all those other nice sounding vagaries...but that they were convinced homosexuality was a threat to humanity. Or that there was only one true religion and everyone should abide by it. Or that their race was superior to all others.

You get those kind of moral crusaders and/or psycho vigilantes already. With superpowers and nothing to stop them? Um...

I think it would definitely add the right amount of fun in my life to know powers existed...and then get a mad-scientist to give me one.

Nothing would really change. Oh sure, for a few years there would be chaos. "Superheroes", "Supervillains", and normal humans would fight each other for a couple years, but eventually we would adapt. That's humanities most dominant trait, our adaptation. We adapted to guns, we adapted to nukes, we would eventually adapt to super-powered humans.

However, "Superheroes" wouldn't help the world, either. With every action, opposite forces would try to rebel against them, causing more chaos.

At least, that's my opinion.

Fuck no! I've watched the trailer to DC Universe Online. I wouldn't want the world to be some distopian pro-wresting ring where attention whoring jocks knock all our shit down every other week. And people are already willing to blow shit up based on the comic book writings of ancient text written my ignorant, desert dwelling cow herders. If they witnessed super power assholes flying around and defying the laws of physics, they would totally lose their shit and make it worse.
