Unless I know what the person looks like I usually imagine their avatars saying the words (and in the subsequent accents), and considering the fact that avatars are usually a display of interests and/or personality then 9 times out of ten it usually fits so I don't find myself confused by the disconnect between what someone's typing and their avatar.
As for my avatar, well I like to smile and I have short hair (and I love the game Scary Girl) so I don't see a disconnect (mind you my first avvy was a horrible Navi one from phantom hourglass, THERE I noticed a disconnect and ended up changing it to this one early on).

More than once people have told me that they read my post in Tali's voice... and they've been disturbed, I say things that Tali wouldn't (I think)

OT: I'd like to believe that my avatar makes people read my posts in a slightly feminine, thong-lodged-uncomfortably-far-up-arse kind of voice, purely because considering half of the things I post, it would probably blow someone's mind with the weirdness.
I look at words first, then consider what I've heard the person say before. I never judge someone's post by their avatar although I think it may happen to me from time to time >_>
Generally no. However, in some topics they can have an effect.
For instance, if there was an anime thread, like suggestions for good anime, I have an inclination to listen to the person with the anime avatar, because I see that person knowing their shit.
Alternatively, I tend to read more posts of people who's avatar catches my eye. I have no idea who it is, but they have the I am legend avatar with will smith's face scrunched up and it says " god dommit fronk" I make sure to read their posts....always.

Out of curiosity OP was I the first person in your examples? My avatar seems to fit the bill and I've definitely thrown some smugness into my comments now and again.rancher of monsters said:

Either I filter their words through my idea of their avatar, or its the other way around and when I see an avatar I recognize, I associate with it my impression of this poster based on previous comments of theirs I have read. Also if their avatar is a girl, in my mind this internet entity is also a female unless otherwise stated in their post.
Avatars set first impressions and sometimes contribute to the tone of posts, so they do affect how I read a post. That said, I wouldn't say the effect is too influential; I usually just completely forget about them once I start reading. I've never experienced the reading-the-post-in-the-avatar-character's-voice phenomenon.

I don't have an avatar because I feel it can color my comments in a number of ways I don't want. Someone's choice of avatar certainly colors their comments, hopefully as they intended. Unfortunately people will read into avatars in all sorts of ways.
