Donate every chance I get.

Red Cross won't take me, but the ASBD loves the fact my anthrax shots are up to date.

I donated blood once in my life. Unfortunately as one of those who has very small veins, they ended up messing up both my arms looking for one. You're not supposed to be sore for a week after donating.

I go twice a year. An organization of students regulates everything here, so it's just as easy as showing up throughout the week they're doing it. You even get a bag full of goodies, but that's not the reason I donate. I'm O+, which means I can help a good amount of people.

Nope, sorry but you going have to convince me more to donate my blood. Heck it took that LOST episode when that character brother died to convince my brother to donate his blood.
How about this; it takes you maximum 2 hours - a generous amount, I'd say - to donate blood with which you can save someone's life. Two hours of your time for an extra decade, hmm, sounds reasonable, doesn't it?

I do not know how or where, where I live but I should probably figure it out sooner than later.

I always believed that if someone was unable to give blood because of medical conditions (bad blood to share, medications, unable to coop with the event such as fear of needles) and such that was okay, but if someone refused to give blood simply because it's "my blood" and they had no other reason, they should not legally be allowed to receive blood, since after all it's not their blood. Same with organ donating. Either you have a legitimate reason why you can't sign up as a donor or you don't get the option to receive any should you need it.

As for the thread, I have donated every chance I find. If my blood saves a life, then that's a more than acceptable trade off for a day of being tired. If you're willing to help another, I'm willing to help you in return.

I'm afraid of needles in the sense that I need to beat my inner chicken first sometimes and then when I'm getting it inserted I look away as many degrees as physically possible and try to think of something else. The only real problem is I currently live and hang around somewhat far from any hospital major enough for this. When I'm near there's either little time or I can't afford being wobbly for the rest of the day.

Can't donate - I was in England during the 80s. I ate beef. The Australian Red Cross literally will not accept anyone who lived in the UK for more than 5 months during the 1980s for fear of CJD (the human form of Mad Cow, also known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis) being given in the blood. Since Mad Cow's has a very long latency period, it is possible that anyone from the UK in the 1980s has it in their blood (the prion, that is) and so we're not allowed to give blood. I've tried - they have bluntly told me to go away.

I donated the first time of my life this year.

I tried to get in for a few tries before, but was always denied for various reasons. Other than that it was pain- and harmless enough, and given that it doesn't take much time and usually does not have downsides to it, there's no reason i wouldn't go again (next possible date would be next monday, wich i'll probably take). It feels like it's literally the least i can do.

That said, the german red cross (wich also not offer monetary compensation, but lets you have free food) sent me a whole bunch of "thank you" spam mail wich i feel passively agressively tries to guilt me into becoming very serious and dedicated about it. Maybe i'm too cynical about it, but it kinda annoys me and i'd be happy if they only send me a letter about the next possible donation date.

There are places that won't let you donate because of your sexual orientation! O.O

Anyway, I would donate but I'm only 17 and I think you have to be 18. I would totally do it.

I've donated once before, even though I really hate needles. I put together a small group to do donate blood while solving Rubik's Cubes one-handed. I got through about 7 of them in the time it took me to fill my bag. No money for it, but I got free cookies and juice, plus they gave me a Canadian Blood Services branded Rubik's Cube. For whatever reasons, I actually felt like I had more energy afterwards.

Nope, even if I was allowed to they have to get a specialist in to take blood from my iliac vein and with the chance of hitting the corresponding artery it's really not worth the risk.

Yep. My school system sort of looks down on you if you don't donate blood. Pretty much everyone who can donate does, and everyone who can't -- lies about their age and weight and does it anyway.

Yeah, blame the AIDS scare. People think since gays are more liable to get AIDS because of da buttsecks, it'd be easier to ban them instead of screening them for AIDS. Donated blood is completely safe, however.

And for the second, you can donate blood when you turn 16 if you have your parents sign a form.

I'm afraid needles freak me out too much. I'm also gay, but not 'active' so to speak. Still, needles are a big no for me

Ah, I forgot about the whole AIDS thing. That's real annoying for those who are homosexual that they won't even test them.

As for the permission, I don't even think my school mentioned that! The bastards!

It could be different from state to state, I don't know. I think if you'd ask the school they'd give you a form. My school does a thing where upperclassmen walked around, asked for names, wrote down the times people would donate, and handed forms to the underaged folk.

No I'm gay and backwards arseholes stop me
There's no dire shortage of blood, so why take the risk? They don't stop homosexuals from donating blood "because maybe the gay's contagious!" but because statistically they're a higher risk group. I'd prefer blood being 99.9% safe and not letting homosexuals donate rather than it being 99.85% safe just so nobody gets their feelings hurt. And testing for aids is all well and good, but there's a non-detection period. It's okay to disagree on this (the reasoning is a bit flimsy after all) but "backwards arseholes" is wholly unneeded.

I donate blood twice a year and blood plasma more regularly. Donating plasma actually takes a bit longer because it needs to be filtered out and you're hooked up to the machine while that happens but your body regenerates plasma quicker than it does blood. That and plasma is actually used more often than straight up blood, so the centres actually prefer you donate that.

Round these parts you also got a day's paid off work when you went and donated blood. They abolished that quite recently and boy howdy did donations drop off!
