I've never played an id game before and I decided I wanted to try out their latest efforts in preparation for their promising new title. I decided Quake 4 and Doom 3 were my best options as I only play single player. I'm not generally a horror fan, although I did really enjoy Dead Space. I did however find Prey incredibly creepy, and would not like to play a game in the same level of scariness.

I thought Doom 3 was going for too much of a horror feel w/o actually being scary. I like them both, but Quake 4 is better in my opinion.

Doom 3 is not actually that scary. Perhaps the most scary it gets is when bad guys jump at you through a door you just opened.

Both games are good FPS's. Neither innovates much, but then again neither really tries to be more than a good FPS.

Quake 4 is a slightly better FPS (both are good though)
Doom 3 is a better horror game, but to be honest, Q4 isn't scary at all.
Also, Doom 3 has an actual storyline that's somewhat developed.

I'd say play both if you can. If not, I'd suggest Doom 3 as an overall better game.

EDIT: Prey was scary? Damn, I missed that part while playing it...

Both of these games get a lot of undeserved hate. I'd say play both, just don't expect them to be the second coming of Jesus.

Doom 3 is a scary-ass game if you play it alone at night with the sound pumped up and the lights off. It's much scarier than Prey, which wasn't a very scary game at all (though was also much, much worse than both of these games in my opinion). It's good shooting action if you flick the lights on and play it like some normal throwaway game.

Quake 4 isn't very scary, though you might find it to be so if you found Prey to be. Technically, it's developed by Raven, not id, but that doesn't matter, it's still a decent little game, especially at the price you'll be finding it for these days.

I agree. A lot of people just rushed through the Doom 3 game and didn't actually explore the base. Looking at those nooks and crannies while reading and listening to audio logs really made the game real to me.

People played Doom 3 and dismissed it as being "Too Dark" or "Why can't I have my flashlight out all the time?!". Doom 3 was a much slower pace then its predecessors, but even with that fact I still had some moments in D3 where it really just felt like Doom.

Thanks guys, it looks like I'll enjoy both games and I'll try to get a hold of them. I only played the Prey demo (at night alone with headphones) and while I didn't piss my pants, I thought it was significantly scarier/creepier than Dead Space. Maybe I'm just weird.

I'd say Doom 3 tried to be a good tech demo - they were showing off their fancy new engine with it, mostly. Quake 4 tried to be a good FPS, with moderately mediocre results.

Really, ID is mostly into pushing new graphic engines these days. If the poster is looking forward to some fancy new product, chances are he won't get much out of their older games, as their fancy new product is probably some shiny new engine they'd been working on which you can't see in the previous games.

I've only played Doom and always kind of condemned Quake as a rip-off despite never playing it, so that's a completely unfair judgement. None the less, Doom 3.

They're both great, although Quake IV is a lot more fun than Doom 3.

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is "up there" with Quake IV, though.

as was said the innovation was the new graphics engine that id had made. most of their games are really huge tech demos for their graphics engines which are the innovative things

as for the games, yeah they're both good, i suggest playing doom 3 in the dark with the lights turned off, wearing headphones can be a bit better too

Feh. I'd say the innovation was in the way the player interacted with computers and such in the game. I loved how the mouse went from controlling your aim to controlling input to in-game touch-screens and such.

I found both of them to be really repetitive, and I lost interest half-way through both of them.

Oh, and they're not scary, not a bit other then the random monster closets that just get a quick jump out of you.

Haven't played Quake 4, and Doom 3 was rather a big disappointment to me. Monster closets meant to scare you really just proved annoying leaving your face in a state of "-.-" as you blasted the creature away.

When playing a game you become so bored with it trying to be scary you actually go into fistfights with the enemies for fun....well, I never even OFFER to play that game ever again.

Quake 4 is hardly a horror game. It's more a charge around womping grisly aliens with overly loud and brutal guns. It's also an absolute scream if this is what you want. Play it expecting System Shock 2.5 (as the gaming press seemed to) and it'll disappoint you. I really liked it.

Quake 4 also has a Homing Nail Gatling Gun, that should be all you need to know.

Doom 3 is good, but to behonest I havn't played it enough to pass any kind of jusgement.

If you want an actually scary (well, more creepy than anything, least it was to me when I first played it about 5 years ago) then play Clock Tower 3.

You can also try.....Silent Nights or something. It was a PS2 "horror" game where you played as an astronaught who was trapped on a space station filled with ghosts. It was a puzzler, with no weapons of any kind. REALLY excellent atmosphere (Aaron, WHY are you screaming like a woman?" "CANTTALKRUNNINGFORLIFE") Maybe it was Echo Nights. Not sure.
