So my friend and I were talking and he mentioned that valve was going to make some stand alone for dota. I told him that a lot of people would be pissed since thats like the 3rd time they've held off hl2 episode 3 and he said that nobody really cares about that game and more people will love the new dota. I never really liked dota and I honestly found it annoying when dudes started talking about it around me but this happened to l4d2, I hated it a lot (before it came out) but when it did, I eventually got it. I went to my PC after getting home and found actual news about it : http://www.gamespot.com/news/6273160.html and was shocked. So is this a good thing or a bad thing for the gaming community? Does anyone really like dota anyway?

Not very good. Dota is cool, but since it already exists as dota and demigod, I don't really see a reason to get a new version of it. On the other hand, valve does know how to make stuff (except for Half Life 2 episode 3). It'll probably be a good game and if I don't have to pay full price, then it's cool.

Between Dota, Demigod, LoL and HoN, do we really need another dota clone?
I welcome the game Valve makes and to be honest it could be better than any of the older 4, but it doesn't feel like Valves style. They usually always try something different and experiment with very different types of gameplay, a Dota clone just doesn't feel right.

way i see it is that im not sure if i like that valve is trademarking dota i dont think that's its what they should do, i feel like its against the community of dota when valve themselves do so much to support the community of they're games, but theyve done the same with counter strike and team fortress before this so i dunno.

but we dont know anything at all about the game play except that its similar to dota. valve would be stupid to create a straight up dota clone as dota is still popular and HON and LOL are already out i wouldn't be surprised if it was an online fps to mix up the formula a bit. after all gabe said that they're sticking to what they're good at, and we know that fps is what valve does best.

Meh...

This is a sub-genre of RTS that's already quite saturated. Between the original DotA (and its dozen iterations) for the people who hate change, LoL for the general population, HoN for hardcore douches and Demigod for the four people who actually bought it, tossing out another one might be an attempt to tap a dry market. Especially if you consider that most players who play one of the above games don't play any of the others.

On the other hand, I'd like for it to happen just to see how Valve handles something that's not an FPS. Also, Valve does polish and support their products quite thoroughly, so the end product might be quite good and since it will be backed by STEAM it will already have a robust network to work with.

Overall, I'd say Valve should either make a copy/paste of DotA and target the old school crowd or try to innovate the concept waaay beyond anything the other games in the genre have done. If they just take DotA and tweak it a little, we'd just end up with another HoN/LoL, which would be redundant.

Given how much I like Demigod, I have hopes for this one. I just NEED the full map zoom that both Demigod and Supreme Commander uses in order to enjoy it. I just don't have fun with strategy games that don't offer that kind of view expansion.

I never like Dota, but still,Valve is not known for messing things up. I'm curious of what Valve could come up with...maybe Dotz(Defense of the Zombies)? or DotTF2? (Defense of the Team Fortress 2)? or DotPT (Defense of the Portal turrets)?
