I haven't been part of the escapists forums for that long, but I'm amazed at how many times a joke from or about the hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy creeps in. From the number 42 to dolphins to pan-galactic gargle blasters...
I'm just interested to know how popular his books are on here or whether this is just a small cult thing.

I think he's good, but there are authors I like better, like Terry Pratchett.

And I think that the Dirk Gently series is actually better than Hitchhiker's Guide.

there is a cult surrounding his work. I've seen jokes about all the same stuff, too

i myself tried to read up to the 3rd book in the hitchhiker's series, but then it just got too wierd for me

but he definitely is one of the best/funniest authors of modern times

the first one was. The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul wasn't nearly as good imo.

There was actually a hitchhiker's joke in foster's home for imaginary friends episode.
They were on a bus going... somewhere and they pass Arthur with a towel and a sign that says: MAGRATHEA?

yeah he's pretty good, just kinda shocked when he died

the funnier part was when the movie came out and ppl bitched it was different, the funny part was Douglas wrote the screenplay for the movie

and cause he would have wanted it that way i picked "Douglas Who?" and as a side note to that he used to be a writer for Doctor Who

I think most of the jokes on the forum spawn from the first book.
Does anybody else forget what stuff happens in what order from books 2-5 like me?

One of my favorite authors.
I haven't finished the Hitchhiker series, but I like it so far.
Satire and comedy make for a great novel genre.

I read the Hitchhiker's series long the movie came out, and I remember liking them well enough. I should go through them again. I also read the book where Thor blows up an airport at the beginning, but I don't remember the title.

I met him whilst he was still mired in the epic 26 year long development hell for the HHGTTG movie and somewhat impertinently "pitched" him my completed script (adapted from the original Radio 4 production, but centering far more around the Zaphod-Total Perspective Vortex-Man in the Shack plot line with barely any original material of my own except for the 'action'). He very politely declined.

Having gone to the trouble of writing the thing, for fun, I felt that I would feel worse about not asking than asking and almost certainly being refused. After all, if you don't ask he definitely won't change your life by saying yes. I explained this to him and he accepted it. Still, it was a bit like Adam asking God if he needed any help on designing Eve.

Douglas Adams is indeed quite the shit. I am posting from a remote corner of Western Australia to say that, that's how awesome he is.

Great and funny writer. Granted the forced extending of the Hitchhiker series could've been avoided but still great all the same.
