As if this place needs another DRM piracy thread, but I noticed another topic and reflected on my own behavior and I was curious to see if it is similar for others...
Basically back in the days before Amazon and Steam & Co. were as big as they are today, I may have hoisted the skull and cross bones now and again... Mostly for demo purposes mind you, or because I wanted a game not available where I live. If I liked the games I would of course purchase them. I would usually buy around 2 or 3 big titles a year, like Half Life 1 (like I said it was a long time ago).
After online security improved and I finally warmed up to online purchases and discovered how cool Steam can be, I now ONLY buy games online and I buy LOTS more than I used to. The 2 to 3 games I used to buy added up to maybe 100~150 euros a year. I checked my Steam account and I spent like 600 euros in games last year with sales and gifting friends etc.
So I understand the publishers wanting to protect their investment, but I am thinking exploring alternative distribution models might be better than DRM. In my case it certainly was. I am hoping your responses and the poll might send a little message to any publishers that happen to glance at it.
Not to mention I want to see if I am alone on this, or if Steam and Direct2Drive etc have changed other people's game buying habits as well.
- Peace
