Poll: Duke Nukem - Why?

I will be buying DNF, and here's something everyone who hates DNF "for what it will do to the games industry" ought to remember: DNF is not meant to be smart, it's big, stupid, manly fun and that's all it cares about.

And this is what every medium does- not every movie is directed by Christopher Nolan, not every book is a Shakespearean tragedy. For every "Memento" there is also a "The Hangover", and for every classic work of literature, there is an entire series of generic, formulaic nerd porn (a la "Demonata" or anything Terry Goodkind has written).

Now, it's perfectly fine to say "I don't like media that is that stupid" and therefore not buy it. That's great, that's why I hated Superbad (because I'm not in a college fraternity or 4 years old). But you people need to get off your high-horse about the "far-reaching consequences" this game may have. The industry managed to withstand games like Bulletstorm, Saints Row 2, and the Grand Theft Auto series. Duke Nukem isn't bringing anything new to the table that the games industry hasn't already dealt with.
And for the love of god, be a little less pretentious, can we? I'm sure no one needs reminding that men like Einstein, Ben Franklin, and Rousseau were all massive pervs. Genius and stupid, idiot fun aren't mutually exclusive, and men smarter than you have had fun WAY dumber than you too. Calm down.

I may buy it, it really depends on how much spare cash is around, if I've finished up my current games, If I'll be working too much to enjoy it, the reviews and what my friends say if they buy it, etc etc.

In other words, I didn't see a maybe button, though I'd venture to say, yes eventually.

I am a little tired of the idea that games need to be like some sort of cultural diplomat when in reality people are asking for games to conform to overly liberalistic social pressures. All any feminist or racial agenda has accomplished in todays society is instead of making society view us as equals and eliminate racial and gender privleges. Just to save myself a few responses, yes I know loads of people are going to go buy it and that's how the games industry works, jeez.

Why the hell is there a Duke Nukem game coming out in this day and age?Because it is a long awaited game, and it has been for about 10 years, a gaming joke that it would never come out. Duke is a like a cool stoner friend that you had way back when, as a teenager. You go away, stop speaking and when you did some growing up, got a job and you bump into him and its really awkward. The only thing wrong in that sentence is that it would be really awkward.

You know what, I'll put it out there and admit that I actually played through two Duke Nukem games on the PS1, and they weren't that funny then,Your opinon and its going to be...controversial at best today.Still your opinion I'm not saying that this game shouldn't be made, because there are some people who are curious about it, or that loved the old games, hell - most of the people who play this game will probably be 16 year old teens, who shouldn't be playing anyway. Proof and sources please? If not, that is a wild assumption you just put out there. Any why should they not be playing it? Obviously you have not seen teenagers lately.

I just want to go on the record and say "I really don't care if someone under the age restriction plays or watches something they shouldn't" - for the most part anyway.

My biggest problem with this game is that it undoes everything that the games industry,How so? I think Duke brings the fun factor back into games, that in my opinion are to "Serious" nowadays. those hard working individuals and teams behind some truly amazing work. Games like the Uncharted series, Heavy Rain (I know not fantastic gameplay, but stay with me here) and Mass Effect. Games that moved away from just being "childrens toys".Thats what they are, and Duke wants it to stay that way, is that so bad? Developers that thought outside the box, giving the player something that can enrich their experience. Its like you didn't see the trailers. These games demonstrate that you can have movie quality like content within a game and take it further, make it unique and it'll last a lot longer than a film. You watch a film thats an hour and a half, two hours for a longer film, 9if you watch Lord of the Rings, but a short game game could last you up to 20 hours. If is still fun, you just don't like the fun it provides you. I suppose 2K didnt help themselves out when they decided to release this the same year as Mortal Kombat. Now if you look at how far the industry has come as a whole and then how far back into immaturity we've gone this year...yeah...not good is it? Immaturity is a bad thing now?

Judge for yourself anyway, I've got to play it to review, but I'm not looking forward to that one. Wow...boobs. Yeah smack that butt. BFG! C'mon, just go watch porn and then play some TF2. Same damn result. But can you kick ass and chew bubble gum? I thought so.

Also, Duke Nukem is not going to undermine anything. It's an obvious parody that is in no way going to harm the medium. It's not like the existence of a Duke Nukem will negate the existence of a genuinely good game.
Does the existence of Fast 5 (Is that really the title?) negate say, Metropolis? No.

I don't mind excessively indulgent games. DNF might be good, and it might not be. Who knows?

I'm not buying Duke Nukem because Deus Ex is coming out, Portal 2 already came out, and I have no reason to believe that DNF will be good enough to shell out yet another 50 dollars for..

Oh well, look who thinks he speaks for everyone. Look, if you like art games, support art games. If you don't like buying a game twice, send money in an envelope to the developers. If all of the people that complain about duke nukem or fun shooters coming out these days instead supported the developers that make those arty games, pretty soon the art game devs will be triple A themselves, and therefore will produce art games that have more polish and shine. It's not like duke nukem fans are bombing art game studios, are they?

Almost certainly not buying it. The trailers so far have looked really awful

Edit: after some thinking, i reckon it'll be another Bulletstorm. Everyone looked forward to a fun, childish shooter but were disappointed by the agonizingly insubstantial campaign and forgettable multiplayer.

Bulletstorm had a five hour campaign. In playtests, DNF is coming in at about 15-17 hours. So it won't come close to being as skimpy as Bulletstorm.

OT: The reason I'm excited for DNF (aside from, you know Duke Nukem) is because environmental exploration is still going to play a big part in it. Its been a while since I played an FPS where there was something to do other than sprint through gunning down waves of enemies.

I'm probably not going to get it and I do think Duke is rather dated in this day and age, but I can certainly see why people want this game. Putting a close to the longest-running dev cycle of all time this is a bit of a closer to a video game legend and represents one last hoorah for a semi-old school video game character. I don't think this "undoes" anything though, every medium has its more mature content and its sillier content. I know video games are in a bit of a different position when it comes to maturity than other mediums but Mortal Kombat and Duke Nukem don't take anything away from what games like Heavy Rain have done.

I really do love how people keep banging on about the games industry "trying to become more mainstream media", get a fucking clue already. Did you not see the sales figures for BlacK Ops? I personally don't like the game, but point being, when a game makes one billion dollars in its first six weeks the media it represents(video games) can pretty much be called mainstream.

As for Duke Nukem "undoing everything the game industry has done" then referenceing Uncharted, the biggest idea copied series(see Indiana Jones, Tombraider) out there right now and is a basically a macho one lining graverobber, as your arguements point. I can assume you're just posting this thread to troll, either that or you're just not that smart.

I think you answered your own question there. Another thing people need to get out of their heads is that the games industry gives a shit about peoples opinions. They care about one thing MAKING MONEY, the only reason for making a good game is so that MORE PEOPLE WILL BUY IT THUS MAKING MORE MONEY. If they make a bad game, no one buys it and they don't MAKE MONEY. If they can release a game long anticipated with a huge cult following logic would conclude that the game will MAKE THEM MONEY. Also in Duke's case controversy sells, MAKING MONEY.

On a side note, yes I am looking forward to Duke Nukem because I'm tired of shooters trying to have the best "realism" yet are nothing more than an arcade shooter with good graphics. A far cry from the "realism" of a simulator game which is much closer to "realism". Duke will be what it advertises an over the top arcade shooter, with ridiculous weapons, witty one-liners, loads of blood and guts violence galore, and titties. That being said it should be obvious that this game should be taken lightly, yet people like yourself continue on the self-righteous crusade of "this game is bad for gaming", like your opinion really matters.


Edit: What lawsuits tell me? Its rated M, guess what, if you're a terrible parent who thinks you're child is corrupted because he/she played a game that showed him/her titties and video game violence, YOU HAVE NO CASE BECAUSE YOU PURCHASED THE MATURE RATED GAME FOR HIM/HER.
