Abso-freaking-lutely. It's a great game, and offers fun that a video game simply can't (not to devalue video games, they're just vastly different).

But don't listen to those who stick to the older versions. 4 is much easier to pick up and more streamlined. Especially for a beginner, I recommend starting there. Of course if all your D&D playing friends play 3.5, that's fine too. Go with what those around you go with, in this case: you need other players to play, obviously.

Like many have said. 3.5 is the way to go, however I do plan on playing 4.0 for the first time this summer (might as well right?). D&D isn't the only pen and paper game out there by the way. If you do end up enjoying it be sure to try:
Star Wars SAGA
Exalted
... list goes on

I'm sorry can't talk, in the middle of summoning a creature from another plane of existence to fight for me while someone unloads a repeating crossbow into a zombie the size of a small van. All while trying to keep two nobleman from getting killed, who've had their souls extracted from their very bodies and when i find the man who did it im going to blast him into next session with a daily.

Dungeons and Dragons holds more imagination then all of the MMORPG's. You can actually live out your character's life and do what you want. I still play 3.5 D&D

I haven't had a chance to play for a while but I love this game. It's fun hanging out with friends and having massive flexible in gameplay. (haven't tried 4.0 yet, 3.5 seems to work good imho)

Yeah, there are tons of pen and paper based RPGs, so look for ones that really interest you. But ya might want to start out just playing what everyone else plays (which is 3.5 in my area, sadly, as I feel like the only one in my area who loves 4e) until you get a feel for how an RPG works. Most games use vastly different systems, and such, but the environment and such is usually similar, if I'm making any sense, which I doubt I am...

Then of course remember it's not just Dungeons and Dragon's that exists. You like machine guns and magic? Try D20 modern! Want to be a werewolf with an M60, Play Werewolf the Apocalypse. Or just jet through the stars in a spaceship in D20 future!
There is, a lot of ways to go with just. one. die.

I've never played D&D, but I have a bunch of 4E books that one of my brother's friends offloaded onto him, and I'd love to get a group together if I had time.

But I don't, sooo....

Listen to this soul! This guy speaks the truth.

Just to add to that: wanna play a superhero game? Try Mutants and Masterminds (it uses a somewhat modified D20 engine). Wanna play D&D 3.5, but want a book so thick and heavy that it can be used crush stone golems? Try Pathfinder.

The choices are out there.

Also, for what it's worth, D&D 3.0 and 3.5 are so close together that huge portions of their respective source books use the exact same text. 3.5 isn't so much it's own full edition as it is an overhaul of the problem areas in 3.0. And since a lot of the specialty source books didn't get updated along with the core stuff, it's worth knowing that you can basically just use them anyway, with a little (or in most cases, no) adjustment.

While D&D is not the best system... (in my opinion) it can be fun with the right people. Try it...

Question, actually. Is there any way to play the pen-and-paper version of the game online? Some sort of online meeting site or something? I'm not talking about a MMORPG like DnD Online, but something that's actually like the PnP version over the web. Does such a thing even exist?

People use chatrooms and such for online PnP sessions, though the DM typically rolls all the dice for fairness sake.

Why wouldn't there be a point in playing D&D? It has infinite options available, as opposed to any video game, where the programming limits what you can do and where you can go. Get some friends together, play whatever system of RPG floats your boats, and enjoy yourselves.

I believe yes, until computers can get advanced enough to be able to dynamically respond to player actions, videogames will always be more confined in scope than tabletop games.
