Ok we've all seen it, the extras you get with a DVD such as director's cut, deleted scenes, gag reel etc. Do you ever watch any of them?

I always watch the movie first and after it's finished I might watch the deleted scenes and or one of the other extra things, but I've never made it through a director's commentary just because if I'm watching the movie I want to watch it without interuption.

Anyway when the topic came up in our group everyone said they've never even checked the special menus, so I wanted to see what the escapist's thoughts were on this matter.

EDIT: Also would you pay more for a special edition if it came with extra features? Same movie just with features such as the director's cut? I probably would becuase if it was only a quid or something like that I would as I like to have the option, (even it I don't use it). Or to put it another way, are special editions worth it? I believe they normally are except for certain DVDs.

I want to care, but sadly I often end up skipping them. I avoid them the first time I watch a movie as they ruin immersion, but it's still quite interesting so I often say to myself that I watch them the next time. I never actually end up doing so, 'tis a shame.

No, because personally I feel that seeing how fiction is made ruins it for me.

Seeing how they film an action scene in a movie makes it that much harder to suspend the disbelief when you watch it properly.

For the same reason I dislike knowing who the voice actors are in video games and so on. If I can put a real face to a fictional characters voice I find it harder to imagine them as a real character, which breaks immersion.

The only exception to this are deleted scenes from comedies.

Only if it's a movie that I really, really like, or if it actually adds to the experience of watching the movie.

The only extras I am interested in is a director's or extended cut, beyond that I couldn't give a toss about the rest.

Truly, no, which makes it stranger that I am spoken to by marketing blurbs about 2-disc editions.

Director's cuts on the other hand are a whole different story. As they're usually (I hear Donnie Darko is the exception which proves the rule) better than the original, it's worth picking them up.

Yes. I really enjoy watching extras for movies, especially when I really feel strongly about it. (Positively or Negatively, it doesn't matter.)

Yeah. I love extras. I haven't listened to all the commentaries on all my DVDs, but I really do like watching behind the scenes footage and stuff. The Lord of the Rings and Matrix DVDs have some great extras. The making of Blade Runner documentary is longer than the actual movie, and is really interesting.

I'm disappointed when I buy a DVD to only find it has no extras features, or maybe just a lacklustre commentary track.

I especially like listening to the commentaries on Futuramma as they are really funny and insightful. Basically you're getting twice the entertainment for your buck. With the rise of digital distribution and streaming I'm sad that extras are being pushed aside.

Blu Ray is fantastic for extra features as it is far more Dynamic where you can trigger small featurettes during key points in the film. The best, and most imaginative extra feature I saw was on the Blu-Ray of Watchmen where it connected to the web and there was a live commentary and Q&A from the director and crew synced with the movie. SO everyone was watching the film at the same time and you could send in questions to be answered. Unfortunately it only happened once, and my copy of the movie didn't arrive in time.

I don't even buy DVDs. If I want to see a movie, I'll watch in the theater. If it's no longer in the theater, but out on DVD, I'll rent it via red box or netflix and return it one day later.

I Personally would never buy a movie with extras, they seem like a waste of time to me., i got really upset when they started having 2 disk editions of bluray movies, the bluray was supposed to be able to hold huge amounts on information but even though there is plenty of room they add another disk, i think that is just stupid. but im not really going to complain because bluray will die soon enough because digital moves that you can buy and download are becoming insanely popular.

Usually no. However if there are deleted scenes i may watch them.
The best DVD extra I know of is the one on "Inglorious Basterds" where it shows you a full version of Nation's Pride . That was awesome.

If I like the movie then, hell yeah!

But I usually only watch the behind the scenes extra's. LotR especially had some amazing Making of features.
