Hello people of the escapist, the other day me and my friend got into a rather long discussion over the subject of dvd players vs internet browser in a game system. So after realizing that this conundrum doesn't seem to get that much attention I have decided to poss this question to you.

Edit:
Ok for those of you who are a little slow, I am asking what you would like a game system to have more. The ability for that system to play dvds or the ability for that system to browse the web.

I went with other, as I'm not really bothered whether my console can play DVD's or use the internet, I have a computer which can do both and a DVD player anyway. I'd prefer the time spent adding these features to a console was spent making it run more efficiently/quietly/whatever else to improve the gaming experience, because consoles are ment for gaming.

After making that statement it feels ironic to own a PS3, seeing as one of the big things about it has been that it's a "media system".

EDIT: By console I meant "gaming system" (as that's how OP refers to it), but really they're the same thing anyway I guess.

Probably DVD player. I've got an internet capable computer, so why would I need a crappy free browser on my console?

Ooh, well then DVD player all the way, I mean I never use the internet on my PS3, it just isn't as practical as using a computer, I mean maybe if I got a keyboard and mouse for it, but for the most part DVD is much better.

I have no idea what this thread is talking about.
Did you not just see the post above this one?! Ok maybe I need to add something to the original post.

Anyway it is what you would prefer to have in a gaming system: the ability to play dvds or the ability to browse the web.

I'd rather the flippin' thing just play games. As Microsoft proved, all hard drives and internet connections get you in consoles is an excuse for developers to release broken, buggy games that have to be patched (and may or may not ever be fixed.) I put up with that from PC games because it's impossible to test code on the 50 million different configurations of your customer base, but from a unified platform like a console it's just lazy. They've got the gall to charge ten extra bucks for the game as well on the consoles.

Just give me a system that plays games. No frills, no bells and whistles, no internet, just a box I plug into a TV and play games on.

I voted internet, because there are advantages of being able to jump on the internet with your big TV instead of running to your office to look something up on your PC. Of course I'm assuming that "internet" means something more than what current systems are offering for browsing. Current console internet solutions are pathetic at best right now.

Well, I do my gaming on my PC, and that does endless other things too.

So for a console? well, if we ignore the fact I wouldn't want one to begin with, I'd have to second SimuLord and say I'd rather it just played games and to hell with the rest. After all, isn't that what you buy a console for?

Other - full backwards compatibility is much more welcome than Internet (which most people have on a nearby machine anyway) or a DVD player which most people have (or that I don't need in the case of Blue ray)

I have something like 5 ways to play dvd's I don't need another one, however the 360's ability to play divx is kinda nice.

I like the idea of an internet browser on consoles, but how its implemented on the wii is just poor, SDTV is just too low of a res for a proper web browser. What I would like to see on the 360, or in the next gen, is the ability to launch a web browser while playing a game. The idea being that when I get stuck on part of the game that seems bat shit crazy I could fire up the mini browser to look up hints to get past it rather then booting up the computer and all that to look it up.
