I put Idiocracy down as everyday when I look at the paper or news standards are always falling to the lowest common denominator. I could almost see in the future absolute morons being elected as President.... oh wai- that already happend. Goodbye world.

My plan is to conquer the world and arbitrarily throw in as many dystopian futures as possible. I would not use machine uprisings, Idiocracy or planet of the apes but other than that most of them have good ideas.

Where's the nuclear winter option? Honestly I think that is the most likely to happen over about the next 100 years.
Absofuckinlutely. Global thermonuclear armageddon all the way.

EDIT: It's Judge Dredd, not Dread.

Obviously the future is going to be exactly like the fifth element.

Fifth element?

You must understand I was born in 91, this means most references need a brief explanation with them.

Clearly, if a great central power took supreme control and introduced income equality, superior genetic engineering, and harmless, nonaddictive drugs that give euphoria is > than freedom and a class system. If only the stupid classes were genetically engineered to get great pleasure from manual labor and the smart people only had to work four hour days for half the year and had endless, meaningless games to play. Brave New World FTW

I don't think Idiocracy is likely. Why? Simple - the world is not confined to just US. There are other countries out there quite willing to do selective breeding to bypass this problem. China for example - they already have child laws. Granted, their one child rule kind-of backfired, but they would totally go for it, if they saw that they could gain an advantage this way. US (or whatever) would retaliate in kind.

The closest we can come to such a future is in a small area that is not interesting to anybody. Like some dumb little island somewhere. Otherwise the society would be taken over, conquered, and you would get the Brave New World scenario, but with Chinese overlords.

The same sort of thing goes for many of the other extremes. While it is possible to arrive at these distopias in a small closed system, in a larger context it won't work. Competition with other governments would either topple this system or produce a balancing effect/effort. E.g. the Brave New World thing - with this many dumb happy idiots, a country with smart people could produce weapons systems that negate any advantages. Or just outpace those guys to achieve complete technological superiority, making the other place look like a 3rd world country.

IMHO the machine distopia is the likeliest. Singularity seems to be approaching - computers keep getting faster and smarter. And our economy is dependent on making them smarter and faster - to do otherwise would be to fail as a company and loose to somebody who is advancing technologically. As a result soon (within 100 years, my guess) machines will be able to make themselvs smarter, growing in capabilities at an exponential rate.

At best we can all become cyborgs and/or transform ourselves into AIs in order to compete. Or perhaps the machines will simply ignore us, outgrowing this planet. At worst we will become extinct or pets. Pets with orgies and drugs, though.

I am angry: where's the 40k option? Surely it's most likely that we will go to the stars, led by a messiah figure who makes Jesus look like a hippy - who was betrayed by his son and now maintains his Empire's sole method of transportation on a special throne that keeps in a coma only thanks to the sacrifice of thousands of psykers every day. This is basic, guys.

Idiocratic Brave-New-World-esque society.

Hang on, the original question implied some sort of change..

I'm going with Brave New World. I don't think that 1984 will happen unless some fascist government comes into power and the world has another Great Depression. The others, I'm not too sure about.

That, and people would actually accept a Brave New World-esque society.

I can't pick, but I'd say it'll be a mix of Idiocracy, which everyone should see, its a great comedy, despite being headed by Owen Wilson, its made by Mike Judge, who made the legendary Office Space, ahem I've drifted.

Idiocracy, Judge Dredd, 1984, and Fahrenheit 451. Some horrible blend of all those.

in reality, the most likely one is nuclear annihilation. but this annihilation will only happen with america, russia, china and maybe some middle east countries. africa, UK, and south america should be almost totally unaffected by the initial blasts due to either not having a nuclear arsenal and so not deemed any threat from either side or not willing to use them but resulting fallout will probably be a major problem. everyone who survives the fallout will die of hunger and dehydration due to everything having some degree of exposure unless some form of radiation sickness cure is found. im a happy person aint i?
second most likely, colonisation of space results in some form of first contact (official i mean) but hostile or peaceful is totally random.
any sort of robot uprising is impossible for probably the next 300-400 years. the smartest thing we've made is about the same IQ as slugs and snails.

But we do have a Nuclear arsenal though, albeit slightly redundant and miniscule.

We just don't have enough physical space to fire them from land, that's why the Navy have them.
