As I will be turning 18 on Saturday, I have been thinking about getting my ears gauged though my family is against it. What does everyone here think? Is it worth getting a plug put in or better to leave my ear alone?

And if anyone here does have their ears gauged, how badly did it hurt getting it done?

It's when you get a rather sizeable hole in the lobe of your ear and put a plastic or metal ring in the empty space.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Is this where they gradually make a bigger and bigger hole in your earlobe by stretching it?
-EDIT-
Okay, now I know what this means. I have to say nay. Sounds painful, expensive, and I don't see you getting many jobs around, at least if they involve working with customers.

For those that don't know yet, its ear-lobe stretching. And its your ears, do as you like. But since my opinion was asked for, that can not be healthy for them. And what are they gonna look like 10 years later? I don't wanna know.

I wouldn't do something like that personally and I think it looks tacky and pretty ugly but it is your choice.

Yes.

Well, OP this is a long, gradual, painful, drastic, and rather expensive process, so I would only do it if your ABSOLUTELY sure. But if this is what you wanna do be my guest. I rather like it, and the only reason I haven't done it myself is because I wanna be a teacher and it might be hard to find a teaching job with gauges. You do know how the whole process goes, right?

EDIT: I may be the only one at press time to have voted yay. LOL.

Yeah, I can't imagine why you would want it done in the first place. I have never seen someone with gauged ears and said to myself "well now, they look really intelligent." And if I understand the process correctly, once they're gauged, they're gauged, there's no going back. That's not just important for aesthetic reasons, like if you change your mind in the future, realize that some places will probably not employ someone with gauged ears for the same reason that they wouldn't employ someone with visible tatoos, so you will be limiting your career choices for the rest of your life.

It IS reversible up to a point.

There's nothing "immoral" or "disrespectful" about ear gauging; it's all about who you work with or who you hang around.
If you like it and don't care about what others think, do yourself a favor go get your ears gauged.

Me? I'd personally leave my ears alone.

Unattractive, and your ear will probably not recover fully from it if you ever decide to take it out, depending on how large you stretch it out.

You know what are awesome and easily hidden?

Go for it man. I'am currently at 8mm in both ears but i wouldn't go above 14mm, because personally it would look stupid on me. If you do decide to go ahead with it remember to do it slowly, and gradually increase the size because if you do it fast you could run the risk of ripping your ear lobes, which is not very nice at all. I have a friend who's lobes are held together with band aids because he gauged too fast, I wish you all the best :)

As stated, it is your choice. But also as stated, it's fairly unattractive to most people, including me. My ex-fiance actualy had her lobes guaged but decided to remove them when she got pregnant. Luckily they weren't very big, but it's still very noticable.

Out of all the things you can do to your body that is one of the more visibly gross. I wouldn't recommend it especially since after a certain point you won't be able to reverse what it's done to your ears.

It's great if your going to move to Africa. My brother gauged his ears and he got around an inch then lost his job and couldn't find a new one because he looked like a freak (of course he had numerous other piercings and a few random tattoos he never covered up).
