Is it ok to write someone off as being ignorant? Say for example:

1) A new guy joining a game who doesn't understand how to play?
2) How about a kid who thinks that Naruto is the best anime ever?
3) How about a guy who thinks that punk rock is trash and classical music is the only REAL music worth listening to.
4) How about a girl who likes pop music and thinks that classic rock is old and outdated?

What level of consideration for sophistication is appropriate? What level of consideration should be given to a difference of opinion?

Really? You're going to disparage someone for thinking that classical music is of higher artistic merit than punk as being ignorant?

I'm not even saying this hypothetical person is right, but, you couldn't have picked a better contrast than that?

No. Subjectivity is the baseline for the human individual and we should respect that. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' - if you like a band called I Wear My Dad As A Hat, and someone else likes Pink Floyd then you both have an equally valid opinion.

- Only if they think they are the best player ever, if they accept they are new and learning then people should be nice and help them. It's a game after all.

- (For the rest of the points) If they won't STFU about it and behave obnoxiously about it then putting them down a peg is fine. Otherwise leave them to their opinion.

In terms of skill required admittedly it's a poor contrast, but in terms of artistic merit it's a tricky one. People put bricks on pedestals (literally) then sell them for thousands as art.

It's kind of disturbing really.

1. Well then I guess I'll never be able to buy another game ever.
2. It was good in the beginning, plus it has its appeal.
3. You mean classical music isn't the only real music worth listening to?
4. I've known girls like that. Aside from their bad taste in music they have great personalities.

So in short, I guess my answer is that elitism is okay somewhere between Never and Never ever ever.

There are some people in this world that will not listen to reason or logic or at least respect the opinions of others even if they disagree. Those people are elitists.
There is never really an excuse for inconsiderate to someone who doesn't fit the above criteria.

If you are writing off people because their opinions differ from yours, then you my friend, are the elitist.

Every single one of the options you listed are subject to differences of opinion. There is no way to measurably prove that classic rock is any better than modern pop, and vice versa.

As for elitism...well, the only real analogy I can go for is PC vs Consoles, to keep it simple. There is elitism on both sides, and both of them have their times when it is appropriate.

For example, I feel that PC gamers can be elitist when it comes to provably better graphics or a more accurate aiming system for shooters, while console gamers can be more elitist when it comes to the titles they have to offer.

I generally frown on elitism, but I'm okay with it IF someone can prove to me, objectively, as to why they feel "superior."

EDIT: Actually, if someone can prove to me, objectively, that something is better then that's not really elitism is it?

Yeah. Like for example, the complete opposite? Someone who thinks Classical is trash while Punk Rock is the only REAL music worth listening to? I don't agree with that, but it would be a better example.

I mean.. Punk Rock is awful!

Never. I am sick of it - Elitism has ruined Counterstrike, Halo and Modern Warfare games online for everybody. What ever happened to just shooting people like back in doom or unreal? Makes me sad....

I don't see the point to this thread; none of the points you bring up are elitist per say. Having an opinion isn't elitist; insulting those or having an overly negative view on whatever you consider to be "not as good" is elitism. There's a big difference, and it's incredibly irritating to be called an elitist because you don't like something as others don't understand what sort of context the word should be used in.

Elitism is never ok in my opinion, everyone has their own opinions, and thinking your better than another person just because of your opinions then your just a jerk.
I was taught to respect Everyone's opinion, no matter if i agree with it or not.

Opinions are yours to have, and that's great.

for your first example, no. Why would you treat someone like shit for being new? that makes you an asshole. Being new isn't something that person did on purpose. I will make the exception that they are refusing to accept they are new and are being a prick about it.

Your other examples are just people with opinions, and that is harmless. So what if someone thinks Britney spears is better then Motzart. That's there opinion. If they start to harass and berate you for your alternate decision against them now they are the ones being the elitist.

An infinite amount of consideration should be given for difference of opinions in pretty much all cases. Of course exemptions apply. I'm not about to say it's fine for people to try to make rape legal.

That is just fucked.

Of course NOT you silly sod, Elitists are arrogent, ass holes and they are never accepted with me. Think Naruto is the best thing ever? Fine with me just don't be a douche about it when I tell you I don't like it. Everyone's entitled to an opinon, if you're a dick about it then as far as I care you do not matter.
