Media piracy has gotten pretty out of control since the dawn of the internet. Movies, television, and music are now readily available, and a lot of governments are trying to crack down on piracy. But it seems as though they're more focused on these mediums than video games, despite being the most expensive of pirated products, probably because the tech to run the games consistently just isn't available. So, I was just wondering how involved you guys are in emulating video games, and what your stance on emulation is.

I emulate games. I never actually owned an SNES or Gameboy, and I haven't been able to track down all the Genesis games I used to play regularly (just a good chunk of them).

I disapprove of emulating currently available games, and hypocritically play a few that I could probably buy on Virtual Console.

I do have SNES and PSX emulators, but all the games I have on them I actually used to own (well technically my brother did, but same difference lol).

I'd love to find an actual working SNES and PSX and the games I love for them, but being in a rural area and not trusting ebay & similar sites its hard to find good old things.

I'm fine with emulation; it's accessible and allows you to grab those bygone titles that only the greediest of eBay sellers have access to.

Never bothered with anything other than NES and SNES, because, well... that's my nostalgia (I had and the early 3D consoles were past my "Kid-WOW!" years.

But whatever, I bought [small]*most of*[/small] the titles in my digital library at new retail price cartridges back in the late 80's and early-mid 90's.

I only emulate old NES games, SNES games, and some Gameboy Color games. Occasionally I might emulate N64 and PS1, but the emulators aren't too great, and the framerate kind of sucks... so I buy most of the games.

I have a Gameboy Advance Emulator, a DS Emulator and will probably be downloading a PS1 emulator soon. So far, I've only played games I already, games that I will never be able to get nowadays and wanted to play and I only have a DS emulator because I lost my DS. Excuses, excuses

Yup.
I'm not going to give some random person $300 for 1 SNES game. That's just silly.

Nevermind the difficulty of obtaining oft-emulated titles - in basically every case now buying them properly won't result in anyone originally remotely involved in the game getting richer. If you buy SNES games off of Ebay then it should be as part of a collectors hobby, not because you really want to play the game.

Stuff coming out on the Virtual Console (for instance) is a bit of a grey area admittedly, although then we've careened out of an "is emulation ok?" argument into more of a "is piracy ok" one.

I see a lot of people say this - why, exactly? Obviously Ebay isn't a 100% perfect hit rate on quality of products, but I find the vase majority of stuff to be what it says on the tin upon arrival. Plus I'm pr. sure Ebay has like a returns insurance thing on all purchases in case you buy a dud.

For god sake I say this everytime. Once you own the platform emulators are NOT ILLEGAL an any way shape or for. What is illegal is using a BIOS you didn't rip yourself and ROMs. So if I own a PS1 and a PSX emulator I have not broken the law.

I *Tried* to get a legally downloaded version of Elder Scrolls Arena to run on the DOSBOX emulator. It was unsuccessful. I am sad. I've only played Oblivion, and I wanted to play Daggerfall and Arena before Skyrim came out. Ah, well.

I guess I can just watch LPs of them...

Eh, I'm sure there are plenty of legit sellers and return policies, but there are most likely an equal amount of frauds and legal bullshit behind those policies.

My friend sells and buys a lot of things from ebay, and while the transactions are mostly successful, he has had many go wrong and actually got screwed quite a few times.

I'm cool with emulation as long as its on an old system. Like 64 and older. I know one could technically acquire a nintendo 64 but they no longer build them so I think its ok. Now the newer systems? Thats basically pirating.

Never said it was illegal, Jack.

I don't care for people emulating really old games, the alternative is to track down a retro console, buy an old tv that works with the components and hope to god that the console isn't dodgy, which in all is bs (as some of these games aren't available on PSN, XBLA and Wii) and only hardcore enthusiasts would go through all that trouble to play an old game as it will probably cost you a ridiculous fortune better spent on a newer game.

Besides, apart from really rare old games, are you really willing to spend any more then 50p / cents on an old game? Kind of defeats the purpose. To add to that, most of the old developers went out of business years ago or not too long ago, so its not as if you are paying anyone other then the console owner that the game was available on at the time, most notably, Nintendo.

I'm all for raising the profile of developers as the game industry is one of the few industries that actually gives a damn about its audience anymore and creates work of art, so I have a profound hatred of pirates. But if it is as old as gameboy and nes etc, emulate away, I don't care :p

I have a SNES emulator and a NES emulator, but I don't play them very often. Basically I only emulate games that aren't available retail anymore. I'm not out to screw the industry.

I'm new to the scene, having only downloaded one game, (out of production)... and currently trying to figure out how to play it on multiplayer online.

I always wanted to get a PSP and use it for playing all my PS1, SNES and gameboy stuff on the go, which would obviously involve emulators.
But could never be arsed to find a PSP on which that would work.

Apart from that, I don´t really have any use for emulators, seeing how I actually own a SNES, a fuckton of gameboys and a PS1 (well, a PS2 actually, but as we all know those were granted the magical gift of backwards comp.).
