Poll: English dubs for anime: good or bad?

Some dubs are good, the Cowboy Bebop english dubs are done well. Most shows I haven't watched with both so I couldn't really compare them, but the english dubbed anime I've watched is good.

I prefer a good dub to a good sub (Fullmetal Alchemist, Digimon Tamers, Paranoia Agent and Fullmetal Alchemist come to mind), but those don't happen much.

A few anime shows have been dubbed well: emphasis on the word "few." Cowboy Bebop and Fooly Cooly are two of these. But there are lots of problems with most dubs, from the voice acting (assuming the actors can act in the first place, which is rare, the vocal directors usually screw it up anyway by trying too hard to make them sound like the Japanese voices) to the translation (I seriously didn't even get Advent Children until I saw it subbed: Cloud was dragging this emotional burden, and the word "drag" was translated as "Dilly dally": it made no sense).

I learned quickly to always try to get the subbed version. English Naruto made my ears bleed.

about naruto... what would it be like dubbed in naruto: shippuden? shippuden is when they're like 15 or so...

I think Shippuuden is a much better show overall, but the Japanese voices, at least, are mostly voiced by the same cast (or at least very similar-sounding actors). A bit more mature tones, considering most of the characters are 2 years older, but the voices don't sound much different from Naruto. Whether or not the English dub does the same thing, it still probably wouldn't be as good. There are still translation hiccups and pronunciation failures galore. Shikamaru's name is butchered in English just because they emphasize the wrong syllable: and he's not the only one.

On a different note, I've heard the fan dub of Clannad is really good. I'll have to check that out, since Clannad is the single most emotional work of film (it's a show, but the genre is still film) I've ever seen.

Sorry: looking over my post, I have no idea how I completely skipped over the actual question. My bad.

No, to my knowledge Shippuuden is not yet dubbed. I'm pretty sure (but don't quote me on this, since I don't keep up with Naruto's hell-dub) not even the original series is completed in its dubbed form. Now that I think about it though, they could potentially skip over all the filler at the end, which would be amazing...

I higly prefer the Japanese version. The English version wasn't that bad, but the Japanese voices were much better, in my opinion. Especially Al: I loved the contrast between his child-like voice and his hulking form in the Japanese. That gave so much perspective and revealed so much about the character from the first time we saw him. Not so much in the dub.
