I'm unable to sign into the playstation network to play assassin's creed II at the moment, is anyone else getting this error message or does anyone know how to fix the problem?

Don't worry, Snoy did something. It's not the first time and it's certainly not the last.

Wait for them try and put a positive spin on whatever it is they did (my bet is for system 'optimisation' with a 'small percentage of minor issues' affecting 'very few people'), then wait a few days more for the fix to arrive.

It's the first of the month stuff like this useually happens. I've been on the escapist all day (well not all day) so I hadn't noticed until all the PS3ers talked about it.

It's a really common error going around the playstations right now, it's especially popular with those bought before the PS3 slims.

I'm sorry to call you out on this. But No way.

There are three on the front page of Gamining discussion and multiple other ones on page 2.

Seriously guy, common sense.

Common sense never applies. It's a general rule in every forum ever hosted on the interwebz.

Given that the failure seemingly kicked in at 24.00 GMT, it may have something to do with the internal clock (though apparently not the one you can adjust, as setting it correctly doesn't remedy the problem). Something quite similar happened to 30GB Zune music players a year or so back.

http://gizmodo.com/5121311/30gb-zunes-failing-everywhere-all-at-once

Let's just hope the solution will come in due time as it did for that problem. It may go away upon hitting midnight GMT again, hitting a date it can work with (perhaps requiring a hard reset at that time if the Zune solution is anything to go by). Or Sony may even fix it before that time, or will in all likelyhood eventually get it fixed later on. If not though:

Impossible

You posted this at 6:30 am my time, the thread http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.178164-Worldwide-PS3-Lockups
had 5 posts in it between 6:20 and 6:30 that means not only is it on the front page, but that it was also relatively close to the top.

Unless you only look at the hot topics box on the main page (which is odd as hell) and then decided to make a thread about it. Which makes no sensse becuase that hot topics box only has like 7 spots and assuming that since this topic is not in there that is straight up silly.

Well yeah that's what I did, I just had a quick check to see if there were any ongoing discussions about the issue in the hot topics box, saw that there weren't any so made this. I'm sorry if it upsets you but does it really matter?

I read somewhere it only affects the older PS3s.

Could be wrong, but until that time I'm going to be playing Disgaea3.

Yes and I'm suprised there aren't more topics about it here. The gamefaqs Playstation board has been quite busy and alot of the posts on there are hilarious. Jokes about the date change, tons of MGS references...you name it. This has to be the best worst thing to ever happen, lol.

I heard that the error will continue all day, and then once the day is over the issue should reset itself. Even if its not true, I figure Sony should have this taken care of by the end of the day. I imagine their programming department is working overtime to fix this issue, since it took down EVERY non slim PS3 on the planet.

I'm also having the same problem, it started yesterday just after midnight. I tried to get it working, such as restarting my BT home hub, (this usually works.) Only to fail time and time again. I eventually gave up, in hopes that it would resolve itself the next day. However this did not happen and I'm scared to turn the console on anymore, just encase any more damage is done to it. Like losing my saved files.

Although I have my Wii and my Playstation 2 to keep me busy, plus this website.
