Your user name is redline but driving a manual bothers you?
I don't know what you're referencing... Anyway, the fact I cannot is what bothers me.
I'm not sure if it's right or not... but, I think shootthebandit was either referring to

or

Either way, they involve manual-driven cars...

Or being mindful of the redline is something you only do when you drive manual.

Of course I drive stick. It's the normal way of driving, automatic is a rare exception in Belgium (and probably the rest of Europe). That might change with the arrival of hybrids though.

You have to pass the driving exam on a manual in Poland, so everyone knows how to drive one - or at least knew at some point in the past

Since there's a debate here whether it's a better option than an automatic, I'll just add that I think it's a safer option.
In case your breaks fail for whatever reason you can always decelerate by downshifting and letting the engine slow the car down. It's not as fast as slamming on the breaks but I'd rather have a back up option (even if it's not as effective) than not.

Entirety of Europe here. Yes we can. They are just straight better. Outside of "urrrrrr it's really haaaard, i don't wanna learn to drive properly i just want to push the peddles and go like an eight year old in a go kart" there is really no reason to not have a manual gearbox.
Don't get it.

One's easier, one's harder, why the elitism?
same with all elitism, say pc for example over consoles.

but in my experience, honestly manual isn't hard. mostly it's nerves and fear that stop people driving manual/stick.
it's all about practice!

The redline is the limit in which your engine will rev before changing gear. If you look at your rev counter you'll see a red area. This is your redline (your username). This is the optimal point in a manual to change gear for performance

If you drive a an auto there are possibly tricks to get it to change gear as late as possible but in a manual the red portion is youre optimal shifting point (known as the "redline")

I was actually refering to this

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redline

read my post above but its pretty easy. Needle touches red = gear change

Edit: I was talking to a buddy about autoboxes today. They involve torque converters, planetary gears and solenoids. They are massively over complicated compared to an old fashioned stick to change gears and a clutch to engage/disengage gears

I principally drove manual transmission vehicles in my last job. They work well in that capacity, and I would not choose to use an automatic transmission in their place

I principally drive automatic transmission vehicles literally everywhere else I go. They work well in that capacity, and while I can use a manual transmission in day to day driving, I would be reluctant to do so.

The both have their place. But so far as I am concerned, unless you have a goal to meet beyond simply puttering from point A to B, there is absolutely no advantage to using a manual transmission, and quite a few critical disadvantages.

P.S. I love how people keep bringing up racing and/or high efficiency acceleration as an example of why manual transmissions are great. While that is technically among their advantages, just how many people do you think will break 150 KPH on anything resembling a regular basis?(that's 94 MPH for my sad American brethren who have not yet moved past imperial) Especially in countries without access to Germany's famed autobahn.

I drive a manual, and although there is a lot of elitism in this thread regarding manuals, there is one instance where automatic is clearly superior.

Traffic congestion. Which sadly in the US is a common occurrence. Shifting every 5 seconds either up or down is hell on your legs (not to mention the car), especially since traffic congestion likes to pick a speed that is in between gears.

Not what my username is about... at all, but that's cool I guess. I never heard the term used before but in racing games I always gear changed on the red. So it makes sense.

I learned to drive with a stick. After I had been driving for about a year I took a drivers training course to get lower insurance rates. The drivers ed car turned out to be an automatic, which I had never driven before.

One day as I'm driving in drivers ed with the instructor and other students, I pull up to a stop sign and out of instinct pushed down on the clutch as I was approaching the sign. Since the car didn't have a clutch, just the larger brake pedal, I slammed on the brakes instead. The instructor quickly turns to me and asks me what the hell I was doing. I told him I was pushing in the clutch. He says there isn't one! I quietly said I forgot. His face was red and he was quite pissed at me...

I never accidentally tried to use the clutch in a car with an automatic again after that. :/
