Since we have a somewhat friendly and relatively intelligent user base here at the escapist, I was thinking...

Why isn't there a chat function?

Although posting in user groups and forums etc is a good way to communicate your ideas, it is somewhat less user friendly if you actually want to have a conversation with someone.

I would certainly appreciate a chat function of some kind on the site. I'm not sure whether it would be better as a group chat within user groups or just having a one-on-one chat function like facebook has (to cite a particularly annoying example). Perhaps both?

What do you all think?

Edit: Yes I am aware of the IRC thank you. I was thinking more private conversations or ones within user groups.

Edit 2: It might also enable people to take their arguments elsewhere and settle them without being banned.

That's pretty much what PMs and the IRC chatroom are for, actually.

I thought the IRC functioned like that. I'm not an expert though. I don't even know what it stands for.

Why not make an IRC room for your User Group? :/ and tell everyone in the group about it.

PM's are still more like emails than chat in my opinion. They aren't a bad thing but I see them as inferior to chat if you actually want to have a conversation with someone.

I've never really used IRC to be honest, don't have a clue about it.

Thanks for reading all the posts before yours. I appreciate the effort.
If a person wants to make a post why should they have to read all the others?
As long as they read the OP it should be fine.
How ironic. I also mention the IRC in the OP.

You blow off IRC in your post.
Why? Simply because you are unfamiliar with it.
The thing is, there are more channels than the #escapist one that is the default if you click the button here on the site.
It's also extremely easy to create your own channel for a specific user group. Heck, TSI has done it.
Also, if you want one on one conversations, there is that function in IRC as well.
So basically, what you want already exists. You just have to explore a little.
Go out, try new things, live life, yadda yadda yadda.

[sup]Also: If you're afraid to investigate the IRC option, there's plenty of people there that'll be willing to help you. Ask around and someone's bound to help you.[/sup]

While the idea has some merit, i think it would be too much work for something not many people could use.

also, try IRC :D

Not for me. I seem to have a retarded inability to remember where keys are located & by the time I post my responce in a chat room, the topic has long moved on. Damn you, Dyslexia!
