So the idea for an Escapist radio channel popped into my head this morning. I've seen it done with other websites (Smaller, actually.) and it was quite popular.

The basic idea here is that I'd put together a Shoutcast server based around the Escapist. Music, news bulletins, gaming information, talk-back shows and interviews are all possibilities for content. I haven't yet talked to any moderators about this, but I'm looking for input at an embryonic stage.

One possible issue is the station staffing. I'm going to go with volunteers here. If it gets off the ground I'll open it up for offers.

Sounds good. I'd listen and contribute.

Only thing with radio, it would be a ***** to organise live broadcasts given the amount of timezones involved.

I wouldn't say no to being a voice, for news stories or the like.

Not so much. Because we have so many different people in different timezones, we could cover them with presenters who have free time in the appropriate spots. On that note, does anyone know the laws regarding copyright and this kind of thing?

well you can count me in. I been doing my own small recordings here at home and let my friends listen to it and they enjoy what i need to say, so i think i have some potential. IF the mods lets you do this, count me in as some one who will be there all the way

I remember something like this a while ago, I'll say the same thing, since it was fitting with what the show should be about, even if it's just talk back it needs to have something along these lines.

Lights out, Escapist Radio, turn that shit up!

I've done online radio before and had a ball with it. I did it for a game (Maple) and had both positive and negative feedback. Then again, you'd get that regardless because some people just don't like to be happy. It sounds like a lovely idea, just hope people have a decent taste in music and a voice worthy of listening to without wanting to rip my ears off. If not, my iPod will do nicely in between songs.

Me: "Hello-"
Listeners, in thought: who let a ten-year-old on the E-Radio?
Me:"-This is Erana."
Listeners, in thought: Oh, God, no!

Yeah... No. I wish I had a smexy voice, but alas...
I support the idea, though!

I dunno if Escapist could pull it off. I mean, there are definitely gaming stations out there that are successful (in my opinion) like Allgames (which I love)...

A concern would definitely what would the station played in terms of radio shows, etc.

That thought struck me just as I posted. Could have teams for each zones.

In Aus we're cool for copyright thanks to the Free Trade agreement. To be on the safe side it might be best to get written consent from the owners of the trademark but only if the host is somewhere other than the host country (this case the US). If the radio is hosted in the US we're 100% percent covered. And if we want to do news or discussion pertaining to the Aus or gaming industry in general we're covered under both Fair Use and Fair Dealings Law.

My point was more along the lines of music use. I'd hate to see people chomped for this kind of thing.

I would prolly listen, and contribute considering I recently stopped doing shows at my old net-radio station.

There can be a pretty large amount of costs involved though, bandwidth and copyright stuff. Net radio costs less to run than a normal station still, but there are several restrictions on it (like limits on the number of songs by a single artist per hour n such).

Basically when you go to set up the server they let you know the info.

http://www.loudcity.com/broadcast was the provider the station I was on was using, could give you an idea about costs and what not.

Oh, yeah, and http://www.loudcity.com/broadcast/requirements

that lists the copyright info requirements.
