So I was wondering earlier would anyone else on this site like to have a signature at the end of their post? For discussion value give your reason for why or why not. I say it would be cool. Mods please pay attention

EDIT: I mean Text based signatures not pictures text based like a line or two like this

blah blah blah

No.
They don't add anything to posts, and are normally gigantic wastes of space.
Plus, they hamper loading times when someone thinks they are awesome for having 15 pictures in their signatures.

No. They clutter up the page, add nothing, increase loading times, and make everything harder and more awkward.

No, they shouldn't.

It would be a huge slow down on computers, its easier for a computer to handle 35 posts from 35 unique users without 35 unique colorful and complex pictures. Not to mention that these images and signatures can be heavily abused. They shouldn't add something unless it would actually be helpful for the forum and posting experience. Allowing users to add a stupid picture or poem to every post they make would not be helpful in any way. If they wish to show off their artwork, they could make a DevientArt page and link it in their profile.

Also, the Moderators don't run the site, the staff members do and I doubt you're gonna see many online at 9:00 PM EST.

It's so confusing, I always think that the signature is part of the post. Unless it looks like a sig, then I know.
However, I would like to see some bigger avatar images. Whatever.

Why don't you just write your own at the bottom of every post you make. You could even copy and paste it to save time.

Within a certain degree, yes. For example, a few lines of text, NOT 5 movies, a poem and a picture of a bunny wabbit.

No. They look shit. I actually judge people a bit on here when they insist on giving themselves a signature.

I dont see why not, some escapist users already do that with thier posts. I would, its just I forget constantly to put something, and have no idea what I'd put. I still cant really make a good realistic sword out of symbols.

Signatures help me distinguish posters, like avatars. My only real wishes would be that they would be text only and limited in terms of character. That way we don't have sigs as long as full pages.

The same can be said of avatars, usernames and badges. What do they add to posts? Absolutely fuck all. What they are is part of your online identity, which is the exact same thing that signatures are for.

As for increased loading times from people with a ridiculous amount of pictures in their sigs, that's what strict rules are for. Other sites enforce size restrictions on signatures, and on this site with the report system it'd be fairly easy for mods to find people that are breaking the rules. Or they could just implement the same sort of thing they have going for the avatars and all pictures will be shrunk down to size if they're too big.

On topic: Meh, I don't care either way.

I think that if limits are placed on what the signatures can contain, then yes, they can be good. Something like a sentence or two, or a small image, that won't use up loads of bandwidth and whatnot, are fine, and I'd love for the Escapist to allow those. However, there do need to be limits, like anything too big (beyond a certain pixel count, perhaps), or anything like ASCII art, shouldn't be allowed, because that's what causes the site to run slowly.

So yeah, it depends, but on the whole I'm all for signatures.
