Are you suggesting that users could post their own guides of sorts? Would be good I reckon. I've never liked Gamefaqs but like the concept.
Yeah, absolutely!

Like I said, I'd like to do a couple myself, things like ME2 and Gears 2 on Insane, or COD4 on Veteran... and I'm sure there are other Escapists who would have a lot to share too.

Then we could all help eachother out and be happy campers.

I'd say yes. this is the most trusted gaming site i go to. I come here a hell of a lot more than anywhere else. so it would be nice to have something like that.
Same here, and actually the only time I ever go to another gamiong website is when I need tips or strategies.

It would be nice to be able to do all that here.

The problem is that it would have to have seperate sub-sections for individual games.. or you could do it by franchise.

Not really, we don't have seperate subsections on the gaming forum and we get on ok.

Though it would be nice for the big new releases sometimes.

And how many people bich&moan about repeat posts? Too many.
sub-sections would help curb it.

I'm a clever clogs, I found the water temple easy.
Nothing to add to hasn't been said, just bragging yaw'll!.

OT, It would be nice to have one "Help" thread per game, but that would need the users to moderate... and that would make them elitists.

OT: Depends on how it was billed. If it was billed as a real community thing, it would be great. If not, it would suck.
Whats the Sloth Demon?, anyway in terms of community thing I don't think it would work, because it would instill an "us and them" attitude in the regulars, you know when a n00b creates a thread and the regulars shout

"BUT THIS ISN'T THE USER SANCTIONED FABLE 6 HELP THREAD!, be gone!"

Now I sound like the elitist bastard!, I'm thinking, tomorrow i'll put in some formats as to what the thread could look like and we tweak them a bit till we get it right?.

or someone else puts the formats in, I don't mind.

I'd agree there alright. Personally I don't mind repeat threads or many about the same game, but I know it bugs a lot of people.

Imagine a ME2 or MW2 or Halo 3 page where people can go on about them all they like without being bitched at...

"The Sloth Demon" is a long, boring part of Dragon Age: Origins. It isn't hard (If you aren't a rogue), just very, very, very boring.

Also, I want an elitist divide.

Would get rid of all those goddamn new-like-people who can't spell properly (No offence intended to new-like-people who apply grammar and spelling to their posts).

I'm not sure it would get rid of bad grammar on the main site, but still glad of the vote of confidence.

So guys, who should I approach about this? Any admin that's particularly interested in these kind of issues or questions?

AND they would get less trolls.
Repeat threads don't bother me either but it send some people into a rage for some reason.

I've been thinking about our beloved site lately, and how whenever a large game comes out the gaming forum tends to get a lot of 'help me!' threads.

I want to see what people think about possibly putting the idea forward to the admins to see what they would think about maybe granting us a separate forum for this kind of thing.

For example, I'm doing an Insanity run on ME2 at the moment and when I'm done would love to do a little tips guide for you guys who haven't done it yet, but it would feel a little arrogant to randomly post it on the gaming forum.

I'm sure many other Escapists who are far better than me at games would enjoy sharing their tips and helping the other members of the community too.

They way I see it, here are the pros and cons:

Pros

Help each other out in the community
Chance to share our little tricks and strategies
Stops the main gaming forum being overwhelmed with 'help!' threads
Better Than googling because you could discuss tips and tactics with people you're familiar with

Cons
Gamefaqs and other sites already do it
Google helps (but not always)

Share your thoughts on why you think it would or wouldn't work.
What you're looking for are user groups. There are plenty, I know they can help because I have numerous multiplayer achievements and have gotten help from these groups.

Maybe, but the user groups don't get nearly as much traffic as the forums.

Also it would be clearer to have specific threads about specific topics.

Having a Tips section in the forums would also increase traffic to the site as it would mre than likely come up in people's Google searches for parts they're stuck on.

I probably wouldn't. I've been pretty loyal to gamewinners for my tips and hints now and I don't think that'll change. But I would check out hints from this site every once in a while.

Nice idea. Try contacting one of the mods around here and presenting the idea. Pros would be exactly as you described them. Another con might be that you get 20 different thread on the same part of a game [but then, you get similar occurrences in any other forum here anyway].

Well maybe for more popular games there could be an official [game]thread where anyone looking for help on that game can post their questions or see if someone else has already asked it and got an answer.

The idea is sound but how it turnes out in practise is another matter, I can still see people repeat posting because they don't want to dig through all the threads to see if someone has had the same problem as them.

However if it were users posting general guides/hints/tips/etc to games i think that would be cool. It means that if someone finds something interesting in a game they can share it with everyone, without having to create a new thread in the regular forum and being bashed for not provoking a discussion.

Or even just a separate sub-forum for popular games, so all Mass Effect2 related threads can go in one place.

One thing i'd quite like to see is customisation over what threads appear in the latest topic section on the front page. As that is generally what i look at the most it would be nice, and defiantly useful if this idea goes through, if i could select from my profile page which forums appeared there.

I think it's a good idea, though it's not necessarily needed. As you said gamefaqs already does it.
But yeah, I say that it's something to definitely consider.
