... sex is a binary state.
Actually, no it isn't.
For a start, rather than having four boxes in a 2x2 grid with one column each for "male" and "female" and a row each for "likes male" and "likes female", you need to put at least one row in the middle for "likes both" and really you should make it a sliding scale of preference ... and then you need a third axis for libido. Then someone goes and brings up 46-XY women whose basic chromosome list (46 chromosomes with one X and one Y) suggests they'd be men but who are unaffected by androgen and have therefore been born and raised and grown as women, probably unaware of their genotypes ... and the 45-XO ones who have one X chromosome all on its own and the people with 47-XXY and 47-XXX and 48-XXXY and 48-XXXX and so on, who have all sorts of issues, and cliteromegaly or ambiguous genitalia or whatever you want to call it [http://www.alternet.org/reproductivejustice/147254/after_cutting_little_girls%27_clitorises%2C_ivy_league_doctor_tests_handiwork_with_a_vibrator/?page=entire] and so on ... and
then someone brings up the separation of sex and gender ...
