Poll: Exclusive Games

Disc swapping once every few hours isn't THAT bad, people. I remember Legend of Dragoon. You had 1/4 of the world map on each disc. I had to swap discs every time I wanted to backtrack!

this. i could fucking care less about swapping out a disc as long as i get to enjoy the full potential of the game! but that would suck to have 1/4th the map on each disc...now that would slightly piss me off probably. but having the discs follow the main quests (like ff games) is perfectly fine.

OT: business side..exclusives are a must. its just like trying to get a cell phone from verizon to work on sprint. it probably aint gonna happen.

i would LIKE for that to happen, but in a realistic world, hell no.

Hard to say. Less exclusive means less friction between "Which is the better console", and means that all gamers will get a pretty similar library of games to choose from. At the same time, if we had less exclusives, there'd be almost no point to having multiple consoles.

I mean, exclusives tend to be awesome, such as The Mass Effect series and Fable series on 360, and Uncharted 2 and InFamous on PS3, or the Paper Mario series and Super Smash Brothers series on GC and N64 (I'm not counting the Wii ones because they were the worst of each series ), but there's also nothing wrong with a multiplatform game like Fallout 3, Dragon Age: Origins, Devil May Cry 4, exc.

I hate exclusives for Nintendo consoles. Nintendo recently has had a few good games that appeal to me, but lots of games that I have no interest in at all -a reverse of the N64. Purchasing a Wii or Gamecube would mean spending money so I can buy only a handful of games while having to put up with a gimmicky motion controller and the extra brick of entertainment that I have to store somewhere.

I actually bought a PS3 a while back for some exclusives. Thus far it's seemed like a bad investment. The library, while young, is far weaker than what the PS2 had, and my PS3 doesn't even have backwards compatibility to make up for it. Time and an expanding list of games will tell if I made a mistake.

There should be more in my opinion. This way developers are able to focus on the strong points of a system and develop a game that is better able to handle its capabilities

If there were no exclusives than consoles would be bought solely on their looks as all games would be available on every system. With that said I've always wondered why people say Sony First Party devs could make multi disc vesions of their games and port them to the 360 and they would look the same. Well why can't any Microsoft first party devs make games that look like Uncharted 2 and Killzone 3 if the hardware on both systems are (practically) the same?

They're one of the things stunting the industry's market.
People would've stuck with VHS tapes if DVD players only played movies from select studios.

Granted, if devs don't have the money for a pan-gaming release, then I can sympathize, but Microsoft saying Mass Effect should never appear on the PS3? Bullshit, pure and simple.

I agree (mostly because I just really want to play Mass Effect), the only way to achieve peace between the fanboys is less exclusive titles.

Also, inter-console online play (if its possible) please?

Less. I am a PC gamer, so i have a bit more problem with this: even if the game is both on X360 or PS3, it can still evade my platform - like that TPS Vanquish which i'd really like to play. Some games, the ones utilizing a particular platform's strengths to their fullest should stay on that one platform, but in general, i believe that exclusives cause more harm than good.

Then there's my cosmopolitan way of thinking that is in favor of even distribution of awesome.

Like Red Dead Redemption as well.
GTA also takes a while to come onto PC, and when it does it isnt very good because the controls are adapted for a console, this being a main reason why exclusives are good.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say you're confusing "exclusives are good" with "post-release ports often suck." It's not like GTA has a super-elaborate control system. It's (for the most part) just a third-person shooter. Plus, while I almost hate to say it, you can just plug in a console controller. Even then I've seen shoddy ports -- If I remember right, my friend did this with Saints Row 2, and it didn't go over so hot.

I'm surprised Microsoft (god forbid someone from there sees this) doesn't just makes it so you can play Xbox/360 games in general on a computer of equal power at... some sort of cost. Like a little one-time-buy online ticket or some such crap. Put Games For Windows Live to a different use (and get it the hell off normal PC games).

Just my 2 cents. And wow, was it longer than I expected.

Realistically I believe there should be more because eventually it would beg the question as to what differentiates Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft if all produce gaming platforms that essentially do the same thing by playing the same games? If there was only a handful of exclusive titles per console, it could be extremely limiting. There would be less to judge a console by as far as game selection.

When a console's distinct advantages and hardware are fully utilized, you can get a better game. Compare this to the common practice of producing a game for a weaker system or different architecture, porting it over, and then another system looks awful by comparison. A lot of PS3 ports that I have played suffer from this, while games like Uncharted blow your mind away.

HOWEVER

If a cross-platform game can be produced so that it maximizes different console advantages and does not cheat anyone, then why not? I think it's great when a GOOD multiplatform game can be enjoyed by everyone. Even if it means a wait for a game's release, it is nothing compared to having different consoles or the PC getting the same game but one obviously suffering. At that point it's just a shell for cash that cheats those who choose that system. The problem is that it seems nobody wants to take the time, so as a result some ports are not nearly as good as they could have been.

Given that exclusives mean we know the end specs of the hardware we're dealing with and can develop/optimize accordingly, I'm all for them.

That was exactly my reaction, it makes no sense.

OT: I honestly don't care, most exclusives aren't amazing enough to buy a whole new console anyways (I've play Shadow of The Collossus on a friends Ps2, and it wasn't the earth shattering awesome some people made it out to be, it was merely ok).

That being said, I'm glad I have a 360 because I love the Halo series, mostly because I have lots of friends who play it.

less exclusives, exclusives are the reason I cant play Shadow of the colossus. Therefore I hate exclusives.

But the reason games like Shadow of the Collosus are so good is the exclusivity.
Developing for one console is a ton easier than developing for all of them. They get to spend their budget on the design rather than recoding an entire game and retesting it for each extra console.

Exclusivity means higher quality so i say we should have more of it! I just wish we could standardize one console or something.

I don't like exclusives. I think that the idea is to get your game out to as wide of an audience as possible, and it really ticks me off when there happens to be an exclusive title or two I want, but the rest of the system's game library sucks (I'm looking at you, PS3).
