I've been giving this some thought but I can't decide. Should the narrative explain where the protagonists got his or her superpowers from?

On one hand we have games like Grand Theft Auto IV where Niko seemingly has psychic powers. On the other hand, when a reason is given, it usually boils down to power armor or super soldier.

Normal guy that just happens to have awesome skills (rule of gaming) should be overlooked. If it's a superhero then we should definitely know.

You know, any 'depends...' option is a cheap option. As such, people will vote for it.

But how is Niko able to see around a corner without looking? How can he hear the cops communication and instantly know where the police cars are? How can Max Payne move his hands faster than the speed of sound? Where did Faith's super healing come from? Awesome skills are one thing, but what happens when the protagonists abilities approach superpowers?

We blame current game mechanics and don't read to much into it.

Erm. I can either just point somewhere and run away... or...

Phlebotinum. That's it. All of them were secretly exposed to phlebotinum and never knew it.

yes they should
e.g. new organs that generate massive electricity reserves- like an electric eel
lots of superpowers can be explained- if done well

If the ''hero'' has superpower while other people get to eat shi..emm.. everyday normal life, then yes, explain that. But in RPG's there is magic, everyone can learn magic in those games even if it doesn't make sense.
