This is a view point shared by many including myself, and I was just wondering if many people here have the same view.

The resin I don't like Christmas is that the message of it has being smothered by crash consumerism and the notion that lying to children that a fat man in red, created by a soft drink company, sneaks into there houses at night to give them presents is good for them.

What do you think?

PS, Sorry if that was a bit of a rant.

Eh, Santa isn't a creation of the Coca Cola company, he just wears red because of the adverts. He originally wore green, I believe.
Anyway, I don't celebrate Christmas, I celebrate Fethmas.
So the original message doesn't matter to me anyway. I think people enjoy the new meaning more, so hell, I think it may be better.
It is more important that people enjoy themselves in peaceful ways.

Oops, when I answered I thought you meant Christmas for real. But you are talking about this new X-mas thing.

I like Christmas, but not for any religious reasons. I like winter, I like getting together with my family, I like eating tasty stuff and I love getting presents. Being a devout atheist doesn't stop me from enjoying all the things traditionally associated with Christmas. To me it's just like another Thanksgiving holiday - family bickers at the dinner table and everyone eats too much, only add a decked out tree in a corner somewhere.

I love Christmas. I love the decorations, spending time with my family, giving gifts and receiving of course, from my best friends and family. Plus I just feel super jolly. I want to hug everyone.

EVERYONE MUST BE HUGGED!!!!

Don't worry guys, even when he takes all the presents, decorations, and lights from whoville, the whos will still celebrate christmas, and then he'll learn that christmas is about love, family, and happiness, not gifts, money, and candy, then his heart will grow 3 sizes and he'll return all the presents to the whos, and even get one himself.

I've heard this alot. The problem lies in parents teach kids santa so they arent out of the loop when tehy get into school. you need to kill a character in a culture, which is hard. I mean, just look at the ideas of religion. Atheists have tried to get rid of that for years.

Oh boo. Christmas was never not about consumerism. You just remember how fucking magical it seemed when you were a kid.
Why not ignore the mindless shopping and marketing and spending and pay attention to the good things about this special time of year?

Christmas is the time where everyone comes together to tentatively try to surpress their hatred for one another. The time where the air is so thick with barely concealed malice, waiting to bubble up and explode, that nobody can even look at each other without biting down the urge to start throwing punches.

And even the presents have a good part! It's just so wonderful, seeing people turn up their noses at every gift, wishing they got something better. Maybe a few people attempt to seem like they're surprised and happy, but it is always a poor attempt, as is tradition.

Later everyone chugs wine so they can get drunk enough to not be responsible for their actions. Then a brawl breaks out while the younger people head off to bed.
Excuse me a moment, I must wipe a delicate tear out of my eye. It's just so beautiful.

(I fucking hate Christmas.)

C'mere! *Opens arms for bear hug*

OT:

Christmas may be commercialized for some: it is not the case for me.

I just want to sit back and watch family togetherness -- it is a rare sight.

I don't like christmas because it's based on a religious tradition. Celebrate the birth of someone that actually matters, not the supposed birth of the son of the imaginary man in the sky.

I'm a Christian who believes in God and I'm seriously sick of Christmas, I wish it would just go away, when they start advertising it during November I want to scream.

Modern Christmas has about as much to do with the Birth of Christ as Halo does about high energy particle physics.

It's still based on a religious tradition, which is my problem with the holiday.

So do you have a problem with Ramadan and Hanukkah as well? Or is your disdain just limited to Christian holidays that have been co-opted by the consumer culture?

It brings people together and everyone seems to be that little bit nicer. I like to encourage things that can do that to a large number of people.

Plus it is the only day of the year that my family can get together and not argue. Always a bonus.

I don't spend Christmas celebrating the birth of a baby.
I also never believed in Santa when I was a kid. My parents said I would roll my eyes.
It also helps that I don't watch t.v. or listen to the radio, so I get to avoid almost all the sappy Christmas advertising garbage.

I spend Christmas eve/day with my family, since I don't see them as often as I'd like.
We eat together, share news, exchange one gift each (either bought or handmade),
if you can't afford to buy anyone a gift or refuse to, then that's fine; we're just happy you
made it out to eat with us. =D And then go home.

We don't sing carols, or buy out the stores, or read scriptures or the like.
It's a simple affair. An excuse to see each other after months on end.

Just like the dinner, I just had.
My husband and I, had our Christmas feast early, because we'll be spending
the eve/day with family, heading from house to house.

We made the meal, we sat down, ate, talked, kissed and said Merry Christmas to one another.
He left to relax with a cup of tea, and I cleaned up. That's our Christmas.

We have a small tree with lights and a few babbles, just because I think it's pretty.
No other decorations.

Christmas is what you make of it.

You don't have to buy out the stores, you don't have to read scriptures, and you don't have to do any of it if you don't want to. If it's another day for you, then it's another day.

The amount of rage at Christmas time, is bordering the absurd.

I don't love christmas, but i do like how it gets most of the family together for a few hours catching up and what not. Also a brucey bonus is that it's a good excuse to drink .... alot! :p
